SEO for a Blog with only Images/Videos!?

Hi guys,

I have a question regarding the use of images/ videos for a blog. If the blog is only images, like the oatmeal, or only videos like video blogging websites, how do they get top search engine rankings for their keyword term?

Is it possible to do SEO for these sites then to get traffic or do they simply rely on social media like stumbleupon, facebook, reddit etc?

    Videos and images can still have a page each with a title, a description, alt tags and comments. You can also link to the images to build context.

    Pinterest is doing ok as well.
