older or newer domain?

Hi, I am in the process of developing an ecommerce site and would like to ask which is better for SEO in your opinion.

An old domain (5-9) years with no site history or ranking for around $500-$800, or a totally new domain.

What I would appreciate if someone could tell me is if an old domain wth no history is worth the extra money in terms of SEO, or am I better of with a brand new domain.

Thanks

Danny

  • An older domain, especially one containing your main keyword is always better. Better yet, an older domain where you register it for 5+ years is better because Google knows your not making a hit and run site

    • An older domain is perceived as being more trustworthy and valuable in the eyes of search engines. Domain age is an important factor in SEO. You will achieve your marketing and SEO goals easier and faster with an older domain.
    • Completely agree with this. However, you dont need to spend $500 for an old domain.. you can get a fully developed old and ranking site for that much money.

Rather try to go for godaddy aftermarket domain auctions and you can get older domains for $20.

  • I agree that an older domain is better, but only if you have that much money to throw at it. $500-$800 isn't chump change. I would just go with a new domain so you can pick the name of it.

The only way I would spend that kind of money on a domain is:
    • If the domain has a lot of good quality external links ($500-800 link value).
    • If the domain still has decent direct traffic related to my site.
    • If the domain was a 100% match to my brand.

    Otherwise, I would buy a $10 domain.
  • I wouldn't put much thought into it. You can be successful either way, and Google's pretty well aware when a domain changes hands. They're an ICANN-accredited registrar, they have direct access to the .COM/.NET/etc zone files, and know almost immediately when the registrant, registrar or DNS servers change for any domain.

I launched a new site this week on a new nonsense domain nobody had ever used before. I did a decent job attracting attention and at least 100 top-20k sites linked to me within just a day or two. The domain is already ranking in the top 5 of several of the keywords I optimized it for, outranking 5+ year old competitors.

    • Dan, Can you share how you got your 100 links? Love to learn. Thanks
  • Older domain has slightly beneficial in SEO. But an older domain with no site history or ranking is not worthwhile. Older domains is beneficial only when it is currently indexed or has some ranking or history on search engines. It is possible that the older domain with no history have been banned by search engine. So if you want to purchase older domain always check there should be some indexed pages on search engines.
  • I'd much rather spend that money on a couple of high pr sites to Point to your money site
