Getting sick of hearing 'use unique content'

I'm fed up of hearing that you need to add 'unique content'. I always add unique content, but I don't think that's enough. For example, if loads of of websites are reviewing product A, they're inadvertently going to talk about the same features thus making it just look like spun content. I've spent ages writing up 'unique' content about various products only to find others have written similar. Obviously Google doesn't think it's 'unique' although by definition it is unique. Instead we should be writing 'unique content with a twist'.

    unique content is sometimes enough when there is not much competition, when theres competition build backlinks to your post. having unique content does help, but i have seen loads of spammy content in the top 10 results. google isnt perfect.

    It sounds like your "unique content" needs backlinks ;-) You have to promote your "unique content" and get solid backlinks to it.

    It's not about unique content, it's about keyword rich content, and then I don't mean that you have to keyword stuff, no instead you have to find LSI keywords, or in other words synonyms and keywords that have to do with your topic and those don't have to be directly related.

    For example when your keyword = dog training

    Then you should also use keywords like:

    kennels
    obedience training
    pets
    labrador
    eukanuba
    animal

    And the most important thing of all "backlinks", without that you can write as much content as you want and only rank for some keywords that a handful of people search for each month.

    Unique content is only a small part of the equation. You can't assume to write a review with unique content and to rank at position 1 - or even in the top 10. High rankings are mostly about off-page optimization and generating social buzz.

    I think it's not only about unique content,
    unique content is just small part of on page SEO..
    How about your h1, keyword density, longtail keyword, and other onpage optimization?

    Content matters but one should know where does it matter! I mean you put an extremely good content on your blog and do just nothing! No that wont help you out. One should do possible marketing of one blog and there you are in Serp's and through that a person comes up at your blog then your trick or your matter should work, your content should be good enough to force people to stick and read what you wrote.
