no www. in new urls how does this effect the search?

Ive recently had my website redesigned and relaunched. Before it was redesigned it showed up in the google search as w w w dot bighilladventures dot com but now shows up just as bighilladventures dot com (without the w w w at the beginning] Ive bought this up as a possible reason that my backlinks arent showing in webmaster tools and weve lost lots of serp on our keywords and terms.

i know through webmaster tools you can verify ownership of both with and without w w w . and as I understand it this prevents google seeing them as duplicate pages. My web developer says this shouldnt make any difference but I'm convinced otherwise and believe google has been confused by the change in address and this in turn means I'm getting moved down in the search, does anyone have any experience of this sort of situation first hand or know what kind of effects this could have?

    pick a www or a non www and stick with it, redirect all of he traffic from one to the other that you want to use

    Redirect non-www to www. Google sees them as 2 different sites!
