Trying to get a Canadian Presence - can anyone help?

I am looking to get our Canadian version of out site indexed on Google.ca. Our company was advised to duplicate the entire site (over 600 pages and growing) over to a new domain and register and host the site on Canadian servers and registrars.

We did exactly as we were instructed and changed a few words throughout the site to match the way Canadians spelled them vs. the way Americans do. All the rest of the content is exactly the same word for word. The last SEO team said that the new location hosting and registration in Canada will separate the US site enough to where Google will index the Canadian site just fine. After 6 months, the Canadian site is almost non-existent in Google.ca searches for our keywords. In fact, the US .com version of our site will often appear before the Canadian does (if it even shows up).

Can anyone verify that by simply hosting and registering a site in a different country where the site is wanting to show avoids duplicate content penalties? This is a new area of SEO for me. How do other big companies that have sites all over the world avoid these issues?

Thanks in advance!
#canadian #presence #us vs canada listing

WTF??? That's duplicate content. Your new site will NEVER rank because it has the EXACT same content as the other site.

Google sees content once, and chooses a site to show that content too.

If you want to rank for .CA, go back to your old domain and focus on linkbuilding. NEVER LISTEN TO "SEO GURUS".

Thanks. It was kind of what I was thinking, but began doubting my hunch about duplicate content being the problem. Ohhh man...I got a lot of content re-writing to get started on.

I would like to know who's the idiot which gave you this awesome 'advice'. Homever if you have a .com go on google webmasters tools and set your country to CA for GEO targetting and here you go.

Why are you building two domains focusing on the same niche? Build one and link to it. Or, use a 301 redirect. Don't bother with two domains about the same subject.. Really

We have locations in both countries and competitors in Canada where we know we offer better services and should be ranked better or atleast amongst them.

You just need backlinks and such from canada.. not a server in canada

One of my sites is hosted in Texas yet in Germany it ranks #1 for the keywords to give an example.

After thinking about my reply I thought maybe I should add a bit more based on my experience and reading.. hope this helps.

Google will rank you in the SERP based on user experience, so if your site has a heavy response from a specific country it will be noticed in the SERP for those from that country because in Google's opinion, your fellow countrymen liked it. Kind of like if you G+1 a site, your google friends will see that site ranked higher in SERP solely based on your +1.

    I hope this helps

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense. We definitely need to DRIVE more traffic and links there and get some response and Canadian love.

There's no need to re-write 2000 pages of content for another site ,get a .ca domain , target your main keywords with 1 article per keyword and simply link to your main site for more info. You're getting yourself in a useless trouble. You have to do this ONLY if you wonna keep you current position on .com US searches , if you wonna focus on CANADA only simply change your geo targetting.
