Are you looking to rebuild your search engine rankings after Penguin? Are you trying to expand your site's readership?

Guest posting is a brilliant method to rapidly expand your reach. It's also tainted by some of the most stupid Internet Marketing mistakes I've ever seen in my life.

Firstly, read this post on how NOT to pitch guest posts - The Rise of the Content Marketing Moron « Finch Sells

One of the biggest complaints I hear is that finding sites to guest post on is difficult. Well, it can be. But it's often just a case of persistence.

Here's a list of over 600 big sites that are currently accepting guest posts:

» 600+ Places to Share Your Content and Get MORE Traffic...

If you put in the time, and write like a pro, their platforms are ALL within your reach.

3 tips for doing it right:

1. Put yourself on the radar first.

If I'm contacted out of the blue by somebody I've never spoken to, working for a company I've never heard of, the most likely response to any pitch is "No, sod off." You can massively increase your chances of getting a guest post accepted by carrying out some good old fashioned cyber stalking first.

Track the blog's editor on Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus. Reply to any questions they have. Be there to put your name under their nose. Once you've introduced yourself in this way, then you can hit them with the guest post proposal.

2. The rule 'any content is good content' does not apply.

Pay special attention to the site's demographics. Is it aimed at experts in a field? Average consumers? Stay at home moms? Before you even bother to approach an editor about guest posting, have a clear idea of what content you could provide that will fit in with what is already on the site. Editors love to publish content that doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

3. Don't phone in your content.

It frustrates me to see guest posters who will make all the right moves in stroking my ego, approaching me correctly, and pitching me with an interesting article. But then when it comes to delivering a great article... They get lazy. It's quite clear that the link is all they came for, and they would much rather exert time in to producing quality for their own sites. Sorry but that completely contradicts the purpose of guest posting. If anything, I spend more time on guest posts than I do on my own content. There's the research of a new readership, the adoption of new editorial guidelines, the toning or refinement of your voice to hit the right notes. And lets not even get started on the proof reading. Jesus. Guest posting is 90% great familiar content, and 10% showcasing your voice and expertise.

Great Tips. Sadly guest posting is getting abused. It's easy to cross the line.

I'll add that it's important to carefully select where you guest post. I avoid sites that publish only guest posts, or those which are new with no traffic. PR is good keep in mind, but put relevance over it.
