Does the whole keyword have to be in the URL for SEO?

For example my keyword is : "how to save my credit score" but the URL I have is
"howtosavecreditscoretoday.com.

So I have dropped "my" and added "today" in the URL. Is this close enough or does it have to be exact?

  • What are you looking to do with this domain? EMD helps with ranking but it's damn ugly to see and will eventually kill your conversion with such spammy name. With a little effort and SEO you can build a brandable domain and add your keywords on new pages BlueSkyCredits.com/how-to-save-my-credit-score etc , it's whole different thing to see.

    • If it was my site I would do exactly as I have quoted....

      EMD's are a good effective way to rank a site but its not the be all and end all.. When I buy domains for local business's I recommend buying things like BedfordPlumber.co.uk and Northamptonremovals.co.uk as this is exactly what the company is doing and offering and so I see it as it increases user experience...

      However, I see why google might not like EMD domains as most people who use them tend to build thin sites that dont really add a great deal of content and they simply target the keyword that is in the domain...

      However if you build a site that is brandable then you can concentrate on building the site as a business and you are more likely to succeed :-)

  • EMD is great, but not the most important factor.. Doesn't have to be exact..

    I would do the domain: savecreditscorehow.com or savemycreditscores.com, etc. Don't make it super freaking long.. howtosavemycreditscorenow.com sounds great but it's really really long.. Savecreditscore.com alone is pretty long.

    • Domain is not really a url. Not knowing basic stuff
      is a tip off to "something."

      A "domain" url would be something like domain.com/index.php

      domain.com is actually comprised of two domains.

      But I digress.

      You should have your keyword in your url
      so people, humans, know what you are talking about.

      No need for an EMD. Wikipedia, amazon, warriorforum, ebay,
      craigslist, zillow, kayak, ..... are not buying that line.

      I chuckle even double when people tout EMD's, all while
      conversing on "warriorforum.com."

  • Nope, a lot of domain name rank for terms not related to it's name.

    Optimize your title, description, tags and body for your keywords and you are done.
  • Although EMD helps, but it doesn't mean if you don't have EMD you're site won't rank. there are tonnes of other factors as well...
  • To answer your question very specifically, yes, it is a good idea for it to be in the URL. However, it does not have to be in the domain name. In other words, if your keyword is "cat showers", it is in the url if your domain is animalshowers.com and the url is animalshowers.com/catshowers.

    As far as what your domain name should be, there's multiple considerations that I look at when making that decision or advising clients. Brandability, length of domain, etc. One general rule of thumb people use is to pick your most important keyword and use that for your domain name.
  • I would go for creditscoreguide.com to keep the link simple. The longer your link, the more confused you'll get when you start to manage your sites. Your record will get really messy when it comes to long url.

    • I agree with GodMode52, you can bring your site on 1st page of search engine by doing little SEO effort.
  • Exact match domains with now suffixes or prefixes will skyrocket you success but having suffixes or prefixes is actually worse than not having keyword at all when exact match domain is unavailable.
  • Don't make a sentence into url, just take the main keywords.
