Market Samurai is okay as a free option, but honestly if you're looking to be as efficient as possible (and save hours of time a day), you're better off pairing it up with a bulk keyword research tool; we use Ultimate Niche Finder, for a few reasons.

When using Market Samurai, essentially what you are doing is going through each keyword, one by one, and going through huge lists of unfiltered/unsorted keywords of which surely many of them are going to be tough competition. Market Samurai does have a feature that automatically determines the competition of keywords in bulk, however it is extremely sluggish, but more importantly it bases these competition metrics on factors that DO NOT matter when it comes down to competition analysis. For example, Market Samurai bases competiton scores based on how many xxx,xxx search results come up in Google search results; however, this tells you nothing about the true seo competition, the top 10 results.

Ultimate Niche Finder's competitor analysis is pretty much the best there is for a desktop software, on top of that with a discount link, UNS is just absolutely dirt cheap compared to these monthly bulk keyword web based programs. The best part about UNF is that the competition metrics it goes by are of the top 3 websites ranking for that keyword, and it factors important things such as total backlinks to the page, PR, Domain Authority, On-page SEO factors, etc. We compared UNF in a post here, and we use it in conjuction with Traffic Travis (you can even use TT free version if you're using MS trial).

You can use the free alternative, but honestly once you start stepping up your IM arsenal, your going to find that saving time becomes the most important priority.

Traffic Travis has a free version which is pretty similar to the paid version.

I found that when looking for long tailed keywords Bing ads has a cool Excel plugin that you can download that will give you a ton of options.

i guess we're on the same boat here, buddy. My number one option is still Google's keyword tool and then I use Stealth for keyword analysis.

This is pretty much what I do. Since, again, the combination works just fine and it's totally free. And if you can get the hang of Excel / Calc you can do some really nifty keyword research.
