Is it a new Google update or just me?

Woke up this morning to find all of my rankings for my keywords gone. I track my top 40 keywords daily. Most are first page, if not top 5. All 40 are gone except my keyword specific domain that remains strangely at #1. My other 2 sites are untouched. All rankings unchanged. There is no unusual SEO activity on the site. Nothing really done for a couple of months. Same SEO on all three sites. What in the world happened? Suggestions on first thing I should do to fix.

Not really enough information. What type of backlinking did you do in the past? How old is the site? Any messages in GWT? Is the site still indexed?

  This is not directed at me, but since I am seeing the same as the OP, here are my responses.
  
  1. I don't backlink at all. I have a decade old domain with good pagerank and I just do 1 post to twitter via a wordpress plugin.
  
  2. Over a decade
  
  3. Nothing in GWT
  
  4. Indexed, yes, but blog posts don't rank at all. My pages do seem to still rank though.
  
  I added a bit of a navigational structure recently that I thought would help, but I am considering that might be causing problems.
  
  My strategy is basically pretty heavy on-page SEO and the 1 post to twitter. I don't do anything blackhat (not yet anyways).

It's probably just you. I don't see any changes across our sites. The fix is new content and natural links.

Don't worry it can be due to Google dance. My website also went to 198th rank from 7th rank. I did nothing for it and after few days I again came to 17th rank. This thing can be temporary.

What you can do?

You just need to make sure that everything on the site is fine. I meant no black hat SEO, no duplicate content or keyword stuffing etc. Create links from different types of websites and have a good mixture. Most importantly, always keep changing the anchor text.

I saw a bit more movement than usual as well overnight, but nothing dramatic. I think it's safe to say that there was a minor refresh or something of that sort, but this isn't Penguin 2.0.

Mine too - my posts are basically gone (ironically spammy sites especially blogspot wordpress rank very high now), but pages doing better.

  My crappy thin spun sites are tearing it up in Google for the last 3-4 days.
  
  Literally sites that were dead and gone are suddenly gaining traffic and adsense income like crazy. Who knows what's going on...

Hey Gussie,

I had the same thing happen to one of my sites a week ago. I was tracking 45 keywords all in Page #1-3 and seriously woke up and saw all the rankings drop off the face of the earth (google earth) besides 2 keywords. No Google WMT messages/alerts, I do linkbuild but it's all manually created content with varying anchor text, also all my other websites receive the same linkbuilding and those sites went up in the rankings.

One thing I did do a few days before the hit was change about half of my Titles and meta descriptions. I don't know why that would have a huge negative effect on the entire website though

I have just found a splog that was copying me and somehow outranking me so that may be the culprit - working on taking that site out.

  G hit me on 08/28/2012 and until now i recover just 1 keyword.
  
  The rest of the keywords was sent on page 60+ and i don't understand why.
  
  I'm not beginner in SEO and i don't wanna stupid comment here.
  
  I ask to all webmaster that was hit in the same way by G to post here how they recover, if they succeed.

  Something definitely happened with my site. I'm ranking in the top 5 now for about 20 articles that used to be on the second or third page. Overall, I've seen a 300% traffic boost to my site since about 2 days ago. So yeah, it is my opinion that they did some sort of update?

Matt Cutts announced a week or two ago that Penguin 2 was coming and was going to real shake up the world of SEO. He made it sound earth shattering. i get the feeling that this Change is going to take a while to take affect. Like its accumulative. I am seeing lots of bits and pieces of change slowly being mentioned around a dozen boards I visit and it seems to be slowly growing.

Just my gut feeling based on what I am seeing. I know some of the guys with a ton of experience like Mark Anthony have been able to forecast previous changes and their affects based upon test results that they monitor (Mark sorry if I used your name in vain but I believe it was you I saw discussing the then unknown Penguin release affects befor it hit).

  One of my sites that gets a consistent 500+ visitors a day went down to 300 yesterday so I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping it was a one-off day
