How I Do Keyword Research....With A Twist...

I own all the paid tools but understand that not everyone can afford paid tools. Here is what I do TO FIND MY MAIN KEYWORD with the free Google Keyword Tool:

1. enter your main kw into the google keyword tool. (sign in, you'll get more results).
2. come up with 10-15 long tail related keywords from the tool that have a minimum of 750 exact monthly searches and are kws with commercial intent.
3. go to google and one at a time, enter each if your kws in the browser EXACTLY like this
inurl:"your keyword" intitle:"your keyword"
if you are a newer internet marketer, you are looking for a keyword with an inurl and intitle of 30,000 or less. 10,000 or less and you can rank very quickly, and there are money keywords out there that meet this criteria.
4. take your kws that meet this criteria and individually search in google.
5. Make sure the top 10 sites Average PR is no greater than 3 on average (1.5 or lower is best). Use SEOQuake for this purpose. Keep the ones that pass this filter.

Take the time upfront and do these things and you can find money keywords that you can rank very quickly.

I think what he is saying is enter the keywords in the search bar and look at the page ranks of the top10 sites that come up.
I was taught to use allintitle:"keyword" with the same numbers. I will have to try your method. Thanks

If you end up with 6 kws that pass the "less than 30,000" sniff test, step 4 is to then open up 6 tabs in google and enter each keyword (one per tab) so that SEOQuake can display the avg pr for that particular kw. Just take the total pr/10 for the average.

    My 2 sense....

Here, let me add to your method. If you see .edu and .gov sites, you might want to pass on the keyword phrase. If you see one or more EMDs OR articles on article directories in the top 10, then it's a green light

I am using keyword sniper pro, it is sometimes slow but good in searching long trail, sometimes completely ignored keywords....
I searches monthly search results in google that is its best part...

    Looks like time consuming.
Why not just get a database that already has all the keywords that match your criteria?
You can just browse the database and pick the least competitive ones and just do the steps 4 and 5.
The database would look like this except instead of just "your keyword" like this example database, it will show allintitle "your keyword"
You can even extract only 4 or 5+ word longtail keywords and only ones with 720+ searches, $1 cpc and less than 1000 competing websites. Would such database be useful?

Very useful tips on choosing proper keyword. I am using Google keyword external and it will be useful for me to choose proper set of keywords.

You can do it mostly with the free keyword tool. Sometimes you just have to keep plugging in different permutations of the keywords and it will eventually spit out what you need.

Only one problem. That method does not tell you how difficult the competition actually is.

You need to analyze the top 3 websites. That is all you need to do. Rest of that stuff is just white noise.

Exactly. Who cares about the thousands of sites outside the top 10?

Sorry OP but that is the standard BS method that many people may preach on it here it is useless.

You need judge the strength of the top 10 not just in their authority but also their relevance for the keyword.

You can beat some really authoritative sites if they aren't optimised for the KW.

I was waiting for this ... I was scrolling down saying to myself, "Mike? Mike?"

      And 100% agree.

Yep which is why I find most keywords tools inadequate. I am actually in the market to try out some new keyword tools. Anything new and interesting out there?

The "twist" is that the OP does not know what he's talking about and is just regurgitating what the "gurus" who offer WSOs have said.

How can anyone do PROPER keyword research without using SEO Spyglass? The intitle:keyword thing was popularized like 10 years ago by ppl who are also clueless and just spewing this stuff to sound knowledgeable.

Pretty sure a lot of people can do "PROPER" keyword research without SEO spyglass

Not interested in what worked 10 years ago, rather what is working today. It works or I wouldn't have shared it. Isn't that the purpose of WF? What I am finding is that the remaining kws that pass the less than 30,000 intitle inurl sniff test, the page 1 sites are not optimized properly for the kw. The free version of Market Samurai and Free version of Traffic Travis is a quick way to take the remaining kws through a page 1 competitive analysis.

        my 2 sense....

Thanks for sharing Ron. While I think domain authority of the top 10 needs to be taken into consideration, I think your method could produce some pretty nice results.
