It's much more effective for indexing purposes to submit a sitemap to Google webmaster tools, and drop the link on Facebook and Twitter.

Yeah, I haven't pinged my site in ages. When I create new content I merely put a link on the site's facebook page, do a few social bookmarks and by morning it is indexed ready for action

if you are using wordpress then free plugins available there...they pings automatically when any new content and do not flag spamy your blog...
