our site was noticed by google because of having so many unnatural links. so we deleted as many as we could then submit our site for reconsideration. however, google didn't remove the penalty because there are still many artificial links we couldn't delete. As a result, we have a very poor ranking nowadays. we rarely get a new sale.

We are planning to buy a new domain for the same company. we will change everything(design, content) except company name, logo and contact information.

We will not remove the old domain because we still get traffic. Do you think if it would be a good idea to have 2 domains for the same company ?
Would it be a risk of getting penalized by google again because of duplicate content?

    "we will change everything(design,content)"
"penalized by google again because of duplicate content"

Well, if you really change the content it won't be considered as duplicate. I think that you won't get penalized again. Google obviously penalized you due to bad links, and if you are not breaking any other policy then it will be fine. Still Matt knows.

No, Google won't get you penalized because of that. A lot of reasons can cause having 2 domain names @ same company.

I would think as long as the content is different and you DO NOT do a 301 redirect either direction from the domains, in other words keep them separate, you should be fine.

I do web design full time and have many clients with multiple domains for many legit reasons without any adverse side effects.

i must create a fresh content for my new domain. do i have to create a new design too ? or can i use my old design for the new domain ? do you think google would consider my html codes as content so flag my new site as duplicate content because i would have 2 different domains with same design?

You are probably OK with using the same theme/design as long as a substantial amount of content, including images and other media, are unique.

That being said, a different design is better and you should make sure that both sites offer something unique for the user.

I will create unique content for each. but what about having same company names in different domains ? woudn't it create a negative impact to the ranking ?

assume that i have abc.com and def.com. my both sites have same contact information and same company name in the title.

would it affect both sites' ranking badly ?

What about building some new genuine links for your website. I think building genuine links from forum posting and guest posting can help you.

  • Dragas,

Set up the new domain and add different content than the original site and you will be fine. You will not get penalized for having a company name on both sites. Make sure that the old site is completely separate from the new site. As mentioned by another member, do not redirect your penalized domain to the new one.

You do not need to change the design. Google will not penalize you because your design is the same, just avoid putting similar or identical content on the new site. As far as your company name in the domain question, you may be competing with yourself for ranking on your brand/company name. For instance if you had widgets.com get penalized and you started widgets.org, you would be competing with yourself for the brand/company name widgets. Of course, you should stop all efforts for optimization on the old domain so that you don’t make things harder for the new “clean” one.

As long as the sites remain separate, you will not be penalized. This article explains scenarios where having the same content on domains that go to the same place is bad news,

    Hope that helps,

Don't publish duplicate to your website. Try to rewrite it a bit even if it belongs to the same company. Google may penalize your 2 websites coz of that.

I suggest that you redirect the old domain to the new domain so that the traffic you get to the old domain goes to the new domain.

that would be a big mistake. my old domain is already penalized because of having unnatural links. why should i redirect it to the new one ? to penalize my new domain too ?
