How important is Articles for SEO these days?

I'm talking about unique articles used as backlinks from general article directories, NOT articles posted on your own website.

Do they still provide the punch they used to or has the game changed?

I would say that links from relevant, unique content are more important than ever. At least as a foundation for backlinks at the very least.

I've had some of my best successes from guest posts, and web 2.0's with completely unique content. I try to keep Tier 1 pretty clean these days, with a majority of my tier 2 links being spun content.

I try to look at backlink building as promotion moreso than traditional linkbuilding these days.

I'm curious as to whether or not people are mainly submitting different articles to the directories, or the same one to many, or spinning the articles?

I hear so much about duplicate content that I am somewhat hesitant to submit the same article to multiple directories...then some call that syndicate content?

Unique content is very important for back link. Article need to unique and relevant to keyword.
Beside, as less link in an article as can, it's better. In each content, you should make diversity anchor text. it's very important.

Few articles on high-profile sites like hubpages, squidoo, ezine.. Write them real good, backlink to them, leave them there to transfer PR. Focus on other backlinking after that!

Unique content is not necessary for backlinking. You can have one unique article, post it to Ezine articles, spun 30% to 40% and distribute to other article directories.

Backlink is more important from authority.

By tier 2 links you mean the backlinks to your tier 1 links?

Still works fine. Get wide distribution. Vary anchor text in each submission. Link to videos and other articles AND internal pages. Include as one tactic in overall link building strategy. Make sure they're written for SEO purposes IE. optimized titles, body, bio etc.

They're pretty important. You can get a consistent stream of visitors from the article directory leading to your site, which should lead to sales.

Nothing better than wasting a lot of time writing/spinning articles for a bunch of PRn/a - PR0 links.

    • Articles are still important for SEO. However, avoid using spun articles and poor quality content. The better quality content you provide, the more traffic and backlinks you will get. Submit your posts to high trafficked article directories.

Pretty useless - you would be far better served by actually placing these articles on your own website (thus building something over which you have control!)

Unless you can hire a cheap SEO outsourcer who writes and submits the articles for you, it's not really worth it IMO.

Article for SEO; eh, they work but they certainly aren't worth the investment required.

However, for general marketing... when used correctly they can provide tons of other benefits; including targeted traffic.

Depends on the quality of sites in the directory and whether they have been penalized/deindexed after penguin. Game is same - if you get backlinks from high pr site with less obl, you get higher value. And even if the directories value have diluted - for most of the known ones - they still are valuable for link and anchor-text diversity.

The new google algorithm had reduced the impact of links in directories (link et article directories). However, links in blogs/website articles are still very efficients.
