If you focus on the top article directories like EZA, articlesbase, thefreelibrary e.t.c, you will get some traffic no doubt but not strong enough to do you any good.

Article directory has really suffered a setback since the panda update, many top directories now take several days and weeks to approve your article and some don't even accept new content at all.

If you want some good traffic from directories now, you will need to do some SEO which isn't a wise thing to do building other peoples site instead focus on your site.

Yes, but avoid the directories. I've found that sites like Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogspot, etc, tend to rank a LOT better than traditional article sites these days. Although still not as well as they once did.

Alternatively, I'd look towards video marketing instead. Video sites rank REALLY well without much effort for low to medium competition phrases.

For the purposes of driving direct traffic... guest posting on popular blogs is a far superior alternative to submitting to 'general' article directories.

Always try and put your brand/website in front of an audience who would NEED and PAY for something you may sell or service.

Listen to Wizard. "Traffic" from articles is too small and a waste of time. I wouldn't rest your results on traffic from article sites. Use article marketing/distribution as a means to create a broad backlink footprint and get further distribution from the underlying RSS distribution that results from submitting articles. Then add other types of backlinks to this footprint (link diversity)

Your goal should be to establish the largest digital footprint you can, utilizing every available tactic/platform/method possible in order to manufacture what would presumably occur naturally around a popular site. Once you start, do not stop.

      Case Study

So how important or effective is article marketing specifically when it comes to videos? I published a video article on Thursday, August 30th, 2012. The video is hosted on Vimeo but exclusive to the site. It cannot be shared by itself but only as a full article. Here are the results:

      · Article title: Vinny Ten Calls Out Fake Shops, F****d Up Cars & Frustrated Tuners
      · Article link:http://www.thatvideomagazine.com/newyork/autos/vinny-ten-racing
      · Social media postings: Facebook, Twitter & LinkedIn
      · Postings in niche communities: Go where your customers are!
      · Article hits: 37,214
      · Facebook comments: 109
      · Facebook likes (Thatvideomagazine): Up 400%
      · Google rank: Position #2

As of today this article has over 45,000 views.

Rollmodl - let's clarify "Article marketing". You've created a fantastic piece of content on your site targeted for your audience (an assumption).

My reply above was referring to article marketing using article syndication to article directories (1,000's of directories) in which case the tactic, in my mind, is not to get traffic from these submissions, though a nice result, but rather to increase the backlink diversity and IP diversity of the footprint.

Using articles for traffic ONLY as the OP asked would be foolish.

I understand what you are saying but I was answering the question from the initial post, not your reply. There is nothing wrong with using articles for traffic only if that is his goal. Many businesses base their decision where to advertise online on traffic stats.

I agree with most of everybody else, article marketing is a great way to increase backlinks and possibly traffic to your site.

If you write quality content, or pay for it, there is a strong possibility that people will link to your articles and drive even more traffic and link-juice at your site.

If you are strictly going for backlinks and using that auto-spun garbage, you can use Article Marketing Robot to submit to many directories quickly.

I wouldn't recommend using software either, but at least you have the information and can make your decision based upon what your fits your campaign the best.

Traditional article marketing is not like it used to be. It is better to write high quality guest posts for authority blogs. It gives you a greater return for your effort.
