I just read a post on seo and I found this as one of their recommendations....

"Do not link each and every page to all pages; it screws up your page rank"

Is that true?

I always thought linking to and from other relevant pages on your own site was good for ranking in search results.

Does anyone know exactly how internal links influence serps?

Thanks

I think what they mean is do not overdue it.

You should not have EVERY page linking to EVERY other page. Interlinking related pages is fine. The more links that appear on a page though, the less ranking power each link is passing on in their links.

Does this only apply to authority sites with many pages?

It would be hard to keep a smaller, say 5 pages, site from linking to every other page if it has a header menu.

They are talking about pagerank sculpting, you can control the flow of pagerank within your site by linking to certain pages and using nofollow on some pages (for example privacy policy page). I've used it before but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

There is nothing wrong with sitewide links to your important pages. In fact, it's recommended, since it's providing a better user experience.
