Pick something that you are interested in and know a bit about, that way your site content will be more likely to be of interest and/or stimulate discussion between others who would hopefully either return to it, link to or bookmark it, & pass your details to others.
If you choose a subject you know little about this will likely be reflected in your site content. You may also find writing content about a subject you know & like easier & more enjoyable.

Try insurance, lawyer and school niches... CPC is always high and sometimes there is little to no competition....

you should try with something , with which you are familiar and know very effectively . otherwise you have to copy content , which will be very bad for your adsense income . IOf google find any duplicate content your adsense account may be banned

Create something on ipad. Book a domain that has the words ipad in it. I am sure you will get it booked easily and start posting user friendly information in it on a regular basis. Build some backlinks by bookmarking and you will start getting traffic to your new site.

I often just pick up a national newspaper and flick through that for ideas. Usually end up with 10-20 niches to go out and research.

Also I have a number of Google Alerts setup that notify me of new niche ideas automagically.

Taken from my article on SearchEngineJournal.com -

    Discovering New Niches

How would you like alerts of hot, new, and emerging niches landing in your inbox on a daily basis? Consider setting up alerts like:

    new * this year
    new * 2012
    will * 2012
    what will happen *

What you like not always will bring you money, but if you are out of ideas,I would check magazine titles and see what they are promoting, that means its hot,it sells, check for same product miss spelling mistakes, you will end up with low competition keyword and good convertion!

This is my very first post/reply. I'm also a total newbie.

First of all, thanks to everyone here for your thoughts and opinions. You've got some really good ideas, and I shall use them. I've managed to get my new site a page 1 ranking in Google. Very quickly (2 weeks), and in a very competitive niche (not telling). Simply by "hard grafting" and late nights. No spammy links, No paid software, no paid program, no paid course. Just based off free information I found on this forum (yep!) and Google research.

So everyone contributing here are indeed warriors! You don't realise the good you're doing. Thank you all!

I think perhaps if I was to start again, I would definitely go for a less competitive niche, regardless of my interests. Experience really is the best teacher, and it doesn't matter what other knowledgeable people say, a newbie will always want to go for a niche that they are excited/passionate about, etc. Good for content creation. Maybe not so good for SERP rankings, etc.

Ok to point: @OP(sany00): You're not alone. Finding a niche can be a challenge for newbies like us. Thinking outside the box is definitely important, because most of the niche finding techniques described everywhere on the internet are outdated, or don't work so well now. Many of the niches you will find using these techniques are also pretty saturated/competitive. Plenty of niches still exist though, and new ones are getting created daily. There's enough niches to go round, we just need to find them I think. Google is also now changing its ways, and so internet marketers need a new angle to stay competitive.

From a newbie standpoint, one of my ideas for finding a niche are (and I use this too):
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        1. Open Google, type in: Cure * , watch the auto-suggest for ideas, then click GO. [aside: Google seems to be doing something new here, I'm getting only 4/5 auto-suggest results. I think it used to be more]

        2. Look through page 1 to page 15, note down the forums, social media and community sites. Leave the product retailers alone for now [aside: Google recently seems to favor product manufacturers and big retailers (Ebay, Amazon) for page 1 listing for product searches. Also page 1 listings are gradually reducing from 10 to 7. Just noticed this. So you def need lower competition here.]

        3. Look through your result list to see if there is any of them that you are remotely interested in

        4. Visit the forums and community sites that you selected, and browse around to see whats going on. You may want to use some indicators here to decide potential niche sources (e.g. buying keywords being used a lot, etc). If you like what you see, you can engage with them,i.e signup, etc.

        5. Repeat steps 1 - 4 using another solution pre-phrase, e.g. Get rid of *

        6. This is all pre keyword research stuff. I think this will help you find a niche that you might be interested in, as well as provide you with keywords for research. At least you know that some group of people somewhere are interested in what you might have to offer.

        7. Hit up keyword research. Never mind your passion yet. And don't be attached to the outcome of your research. You're only crunching numbers here. If the competition is too high, forget it and go back to step 1. [aside: a lot (not all) of the tutorials, etc about keyword research on the internet is outdated now, and cannot help you in 2012/2013, sorry to say. I didn't pay for any keyword research tool. I just used advice from this very forum and Google Keyword Tool+Excel]

The whole process should take about 2 hours or less, if you wish to do it right. Maybe you also want to document your progress so you can track it. You should end up with at least 7 niches and about [5607] keywords to use for your Keyword Research. No doubt, you're off to the races!

Of course there's more to it than that, but if you can get this far, it would be better than nothing.

Having said all that, some training/reports might be useful. I've heard good things said about the adsense flippers report, and Oz (?) niche finding techniques (?). I'm away to look those up right now.

Sorry about the long post (its my first, so I'm not very good yet). Hope this helps though. Goodluck!

Always aim to feed a hungry market. Technology products like TV's, Tablets, Home Cinema System and Blu-ray's are things I not only like promoting, but writing about. It's important to enjoy what you're doing, so choose an area that you like or have a passion for use your keyword tool wisely for your product selections and get writing.

I know everyone else says to pick something you're interested in and you know well, but if the Cost-Per-Click is low and/or the Search Volume is low...it's probably not the one to go with.

If your friend is good at writing articles, chances are he can write on any topic. Go for the niches that have High Search Volume, High Advertising Competition, High CPC and Low Competition in the SERPS.

I've got 20 Adsense sites at the moment (building more as we speak) and I have no clue about most of the topics. I just hired a good writer

      Thanks for the mention, Dave!

Keyword Research is (in our opinion) the most important step when creating a niche site around AdSense. Keep in mind that research an industry or niche is much different than choosing a small, localized niche for a specific niche site. If I were going to get into, say, manufacturing ipad cases in China and selling them directly in the US, KW research would not be my primary concern.

Dave - That "follow your passion" argument comes from some fairly successful, high-level players. (Gary V. is one, for example) I think there's a point to make there...but it's not applicable for 99% of the warriors starting out, so I think you're right. Screw the passion for now...put your head down and get some work done, eh?

That's only by choice (not applicable for 99% of the warriors starting out).

If their going to do something they don't enjoy, their better off getting an off-line 9-5 job. That's the whole point of working for yourself, doing what you enjoy, not doing what others enjoy.

I never did understand why people make niche decisions so difficult, stop researching keywords & research what you enjoy. Life's too short to be monetizing toaster ovens (unless you enjoy toaster ovens).

This is what I've come to realize, why do I have to make a site around a specific keyword just because the cpc is high, instead of making a site on a topic that I am passionate about.

Many fall victim to the forum mentality, everybody's building Amazon/Adsense niche sites and using backlinking software so I will to.

I hear what you're saying, Yukon, but you're assuming that's the only (or main) point of working for yourself...doing what you enjoy.

There are other points that deserve consideration, I think.

Let's say I have a comprehensive review site on toaster ovens that pays the bills. I definitely don't enjoy it...but let's say it takes up 20-25 hours a week and the rest of my time I spend on a beach in Thailand with my wife and kids, soaking up the rays and drinking some Singha beer. Couldn't that be good enough for me?

Sure...writing toaster oven reviews makes me throw up in my mouth a bit each time I sit down at my laptop...but maybe I find it well worth it for the other 20 hours I get to spend doing whatever I like.

Try to find out what interest you most. You need to be passionate about it. If you have started a blog on a niche just because it has high CPC, it is more likely that you will fail. The reason being you won't be able to provide your users with the information they are looking for. In my opinion, you should give considerable amount of time before choosing a niche.

This is thje biggest nonsense that people keep posting on the boards, what if OP's passion is something like knitting scarves...you can be passionateabout it but you wont make a dime cus it has a CPC of $0,05

I really don't get people like you... this is a business, this is not talking about your hobby/interest, if you can ts great but 99% of the times the intrests of IMers are not real money makers....

There are several sites that allow you to sign up with them for free and they send you different niches you would never have thought of daily.

Secondly, pick a big article directory site, shopping site e.t.c and look through the categories. I don't advice you just go with what they have because it is readily available it might be a pain in the neck to out rank. Put on your thinking cap, find a keyword/niche close to the categories you find and run it on Google Keyword Tool.

By also running it on GKT, you are likely to find other keywords and niche.

    Just look carefully.

    Hello,

One of the way I use to come up with niches ideas is to check out flippa.com

What I do is the following:

    1) check for the just sold sites
    2) check that they have good traffic and revenue
    3) check the website on the way is structured, how many kw's are targeting
    4) after I got all the kw's I do start the deep research of the niche

So to make it easy to understand we are getting ideas from people that already are successful.

    Hope that helps.

Marketers are forgetting that their is a world outside of IM, we keep looking at things from a marketing stand point. You need a idea on what niche to go after right, well somebody out there needs a idea for a clever way to propose to his girlfriend, and somebody else out there needs ideas on how to make money.

There's your site, an entire blog on great ideas, it can even be a user generated site, it's the fastest way to grow a site anyway.

Edit: After thinking about this site a little further , you could have different categories, baking ideas, decorating ideas etc, marketers have a one track mind, dare to be different.
