Finally Making Money With Amazon

I've made a few dollars here and there on Amazon, but after experimenting and trying a few different things I've finally been able to break into Amazon and my partner and I have made some decent sales over the past 2 weeks. It's not a lot of money at the moment and it doesn't come close to my adsense income... but it's a decent start (about $30 so far) and it's scalable for sure.

Anyway, I was just excited about the progress so I felt compelled to let it out

    It's a great feeling when you know that, you've found a new and more effective way and especially when the sales start rolling in on a regular basis. It's a time game and involves a lot of trial and error and finding a methodology that suits your style.

      Definitely. I had to do a lot of trial and error and a lot of picking a part what I was reading here on the warrior forum. I mixed what I was reading from one thread with what I was reading on another thread and bingo! I'm a giant fan of diversifying so finding a new avenue to make money is always a great feeling

      Haha. I don't think I could build 30 sites in 30 days of this style. These sites are much bigger authority sites so they take quite a bit more time to build. Also I'd really like to work out the kinks a little more before I go on trying to preach how to do it.

        Yes. Please do yourself a favor and avoid the "100 sites making $1/day" strategy. Focus on a few "good" sites.

                  Congrats on your results Mosa,

                  I too am on a amazon journey, however i use the ipk system to create my sites. I have been getting on and off the min payout from amazon with no work apart from updating the site with more products or renewing the domain.

                  I am fine tuning the ipk system with each site i create. I also have a friend who is trying to automate the creation and information gathering.

                        Hi Mosa. I currently have seven reviews on my site. I actually purchased an EMD domain and was going to build out an Amazon site using the more 'traditional' Jan Roos style model. A day later I purchased Wolfmmiii's blueprint and decided to implement his method instead. I've also started building out another site that currently has 13 reviews (really high dollar items so I think the conversions will be less but with larger payouts), but no sales as of yet. It's a nice start for me, looking forward to seeing how my site will be doing when I hit 100 reviews!!!

    Is it like Wolfmmii's strat where you don't do a lot of link building? Or are you focusing on SEO a bit more?

    Anything going on with social media?

    What is the average number of words for your posts/reviews?

      Hey Nick. I'm not doing much of any link building just yet. It's more on just going for really low competition and building lots of content. It does pick up from some of the strategies of Wolfmmiii.

      We're not utilizing social media at the moment. Just search engine traffic. The average word count per article is 400 words.

      Have you worked on any amazon sites yourself yet?

        I'll defo be following this thread! I myself have just started my amazon experiment. I have already made one amazon site based on the more traditional guidelines. A few days ago I started on a Wolfmmii style site. It will be interesting to see how things go.

          Hey Jimmy, keep us all updated on your progress as well.

          Right now our site is slowly increasing in visitor count and I'm about to launch about another weeks worth of posts. I'm figuring that scheduling posts in advance is really working well for keeping organized while allowing posts to drip feed.

            Well, over the last five days I have written 13 product reviews and all of them have just been indexed today. Of the 13 reviews, 10 are on page one of google. I think i'll do some minor back linking to the weaker pages with some edu blogs that I have. I'm going to write up another 20-25 reviews this week and just keep building my site out. I hope to see some success like Mosa is seeing. It's got me pretty excited!

              Well, right now it seem like the site is having a dry spell. From the last 67 amazon click throughs, we haven't made any sales. I've read that sometimes it's really hit or miss and some buyers will go and buy 3 items at once.

              The thing is, I also read these claims of people getting 10% or higher sales per amazon visitor. I would assume that since the keywords I'm going for are very targeted and buyer friendly, they would see similar results, but it seems it's not the case right now.

              One factor may be that the average price of the items we're going for are well over $200. Most people may not be willing to drop the big bucks that easily.

              I'll just keep going with it and see what happens.

                I believe there are some tricks to extend the 24 hour cookie to a couple of weeks or months for the specific item, not sure how that exactly works but definitely worth to look into if you haven't done yet.

                    Yeah that was it indeed, guess we can't fool Amazon by putting it intheir cart ourselves can we, and even if we can it's probably an invitation for a ban. So perhaps not such good idea after all indeed. Thanks for mentioning as I worded it as a trick but I actually thought it was a legit way and just had to do with how you create the affiliate product link.

                    I think you can do a direct link to the shopping cart for a product. So you can have a link on your site that says "buy now" or something like that and then take them to the shopping cart. I'm assuming that the 90 day cookie only counts for that one item though, right?

                Mosa - I find the same thing with my Amazon sites - I'll feel like I have a ton of click-throughs with not much to show, then a handful of click-throughs that positively bank. When I was first getting started, someone followed one of my links and bought some health and beauty products plus EIGHTEEN articles of men's clothing - none of them cheap, and none of them remotely related to anything else I was selling. You'll have some happy surprises - it's part of what makes Amazon so fun.

        Glad to hear that strategy is beginning to pick up for you. I'm working on an Amazon site now. I also have a site selling a CB product and an AdSense site, but the Amazon site is drawing most of my attention nowadays.

        I was originally trying to find 3 - 5 good keywords to rank each page for, but that's taking up a lot of time finding all the right keywords and deciding which ones should go well together.

        I think I'll shift focus back to content and just work on getting 4+ reviews up per day. I still have TONS of related keywords for each product, though, so perhaps it's time to start making feeder sites to target these odd keywords.

        What are your thoughts on that? If you're selling a certain dog crate and you also find keywords like "best dog crate" "dog crate reviews" "dog crate comparing"...do you think it's worth making a feeder site or secondary blog to go after these keywords?

          Well, when I'm building niche sites, I do this all the time. But for the bigger amazon authority site, I would use as much of a silo structure as I can with "dog crate" being at the top and keywords like "dog crate reviews" being under that, and then other specific dog crate reviews can be under that.

            That's the strategy I am going with ... lot's a reviews, and a silo architecture. I am not concerned about competition just yet, but my reviews are starting out and Page 2 and 3 even though I have less than 10 reviews. I had a PR2 domain sitting around, so I am using it for the site.

            I currently still have a lot of setup to do on the site ... since this is my third site on my priority list, it is going slow, but I am getting search engine traffic, so that's a good start.

            I have a couple more promotional techniques I will try, and once I get it all going, I was going to post a thread with my results.

    Why not add some cheaper products as well? The increase in sales volume is also an increase in overall commission payout. I really don't recommend just going after the most expensive products on Amazon. I think that is a big mistake. Mix it up. It can have a very positive effect on your bottom line. Plus the additional content and long tail keywords for traffic.

      Agreed. I find the $40 to $50 range is a nice spot to build up your sales volume which then puts you in the higher Amazon commission bracket.

      Anything below the $40 to $50 and people probably aren't too interested in searching for reviews anyway.

            I'm not going to be sharing the site only because the keywords we're going after are ones that we don't want to give out. There are 38 reviews done so far on the main site and it gets around 50 visitors per day... so really not a lot. And honestly it would be a LOT of work to write all this content yourself. At the moment I don't know if I can recommend what i'm doing, because ever since the dry spell it's not been profitable.

            So I guess I should retract that we're "making money".

            Oh well, I'll keep testing.

              And I thought only my site was having dry spell. I also started an amazon site at the start of this month, got first sale on 12th of this month earning me $4.36 commission. But, since then I am getting visits to my site, however most of the users are not staying having high bounce rate and poor avg visit duration. Product reviews have an avg of 500 words, and I put a lot of research work to write a product review. So at least in my view, reviews are of good quality:confused:

                How many affiliate clicks are you getting per day? If you are seeing traffic, then you are on the right path. It means people are searching for products in your niche and you are ranking well.

                If you aren't getting clicks, you have to look at your content, your link placement, or your calls to action. Don't put too much stock in your results until you are seeing at least 100 affiliate link clicks per day.

                Well I think that's a little different from what I'm getting. I'm getting visitors and people are reading the content and clicking through to amazon, but they're just not buying that often.

                    Not that many returning visitors at the moment (around 3-4 per day).

                    Right now all of the links are utilizing the 24 hour cookie.

                    Also we include an About us, Contact Us, FTC Disclosure, and Privacy Policy.

                        Pretty much it's a disclosure letting people know that you'll be making money from your site. I've searched for something that will auto-generate this, but haven't found anything yet. You can just use someone else's ftc disclosure as a template for yours.

              I have like $5.64 in my Amazon account from 2010. Don't remember what I did to get it. But I know that it was pretty difficult.
              May need to go back and try again.

                Lol I feel you man, I also have like $8.50 or something in my account since 2011, and much more effort put into it then I should. At a certain moment I had 25 unique visitors / day and the site made $2/month. How ugly is that.

                Btw I used some auto store builder software so all content was kind of duplicate, but well visitors are visitors right. When I saw that poor conversion I just knew it wasn't worth to build links to the site.

              Until you are receiving 100 affiliate clicks per day, your stats will be insignificant. Keep building your site(s) out until you are receiving enough traffic to hit 100 clicks per day. That's my personal target for every new site I build and it hasn't steered me wrong yet.

    Often Amazon keywords are not that easy to rank, and don't have the search volume that you expect so to make it worthwhile enough you need to go for high priced items.

    Let's take a 1k exact kw at Amazon for example, often those are already not the easiest ones to rank. Now let's say you rank at #4 for that one and thus you get like 5-10% of the traffic for that kw, which translates to 50-100 visits a month. Now let's add up that 10% conversion that you might be able to achieve a with a $40-50 product.

    Assuming a 4% commission cause you're just starting out, well that translates to 5-10 sales a month or in other words 4%*$45*10 = $18/month revenue.

    Funny enough a $40-50 product is often just as hard to rank as a $300 product, and the conversion can be pretty much the same when chosing the right niche.

    I do agree that its good to have some cheaper items to raise your commission to the 8% level.

    It's always good to diversify your income streams, especially when it comes to Adsense, I myself am trying to incorporate as much Amazon earnings to my sites as possible.

    Also looking into CPA, but it's much harder finding suitable ads for your niche.

      I am also on the Amazon site journey, i have been getting min £25 per month ($40ish) on and off for a while. Its not easy i am using the IPK system which came out a long while ago. I create sites i don't need to touch again apart from adding more products or renewing the domain.

      What i was shocked by was that i never changed over my amazon affiliate payment system, so i was on the fix one for a while. I only realised and asked amazon to switch it to the new system this year 2012(the more you sell the higher the %) and my income increased fast.

      Anybody else still using the IPK system? Also could someone explain what the Wolfmmii style sites look like?

      Any rough idea from your experience, how much visitors a site should receive to get at least 100 affiliate clicks daily and avg conversion rate from those clicks? The traffic on my site is increasing daily, I am receiving 30+ visitors at the moment. The site is just 15 days old and have 12 reviews, out of which only 7 reviews are indexed by google. I have seen your sample site product review page, can you tell me which link receives most clicks and which link converts well?

      One more thing, I am using my Analytics account to monitor site traffic, there are lot of visitors who have Avg visit duration of 00:00:00, is it possible that few of these users are actually clicking on affiliate link and reading review but leave the site quickly before analytics script is loaded(script is loaded in header using google analytics plugin for wordpress). Just being positive!

      @MOSA: Can you share your ftc disclosure, so that I can use it on my site?

        There are so many variables that this would be impossible. I have some sites that see a 40% visitor-to-click ratio and others that are closer to 16%.

        I believe with StatCounter, if someone comes to my site, sits there for 20 minutes, then clicks an affiliate link, the stat will show 0:00 since there was no second click on my website to measure the time. I could be wrong as I don't pay too much attention to it (only look at clicks and such).

          I have put "[Insert your name] is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to [insert the applicable site name (amazon.com, endless.com, amazonsupply.com, or myhabit.com)]." on every page of my site footer. Found this in Amazon Affiliate Operating Agreement.

          Is there any thing else, I need to put on my site to make it legal. Other than Amazon, the site is also monetized via Adsense and already have a privacy policy.

    Wolfmii, I swear that statcounter provdes dodgy stats. For example I add up all the clicks to amazon with it and compare it to the daily trend on Amazon associates stats and they don't match, not even close. e.g yesterday my 2 sites say i got 12 click through to amazon on statcounter but on amazon it says i have around 25. Have you had a similar experience?

    Back on topic though I have made 44 dollars this month so far and just broke the 6% commission barrier.

      It's possible. I only look at StatCounter to see where my traffic is coming from. At the end of the day, it only matters what Amazon reports when it comes to clicks so I don't even worry about what StatCounter shows for exit clicks.

    It was interesting to find out that if my review has at least 400 words and it is some low-competing word, page get's indexed almost immediately (in about 5-10 minutes). If post has mostly duplicate content and low word count - it can take anywhere from 1-2 days up to a week to get indexed by Google.

    It's funny man, I'd love to make more money with Amazon.

    But it is a lot of work building those sites. I have a few hobby sites I'd like to build off from with Amazon, and I make money here and there but still never enough to have them pay me.

    I figure I'll make a bunch of money with Empower, or something akin, then outsource the projects as I learn more.

    My money from Amazon though has 100% come from blogging/SEO, never tried any social media with it before.

    Amazon is one of our best money makers but it's true that it requires some work up front.

    However, they are very good at converting visitors and once you start sending a good number of clicks (from targeted visitors of course) on a daily basis, your efforts really start to pay off big time.
