Does Google Discount Article Directories?

I've been focusing most of my efforts lately on social bookmarks and web 2.0 sites as sources of backlinks. I have a few articles on article directories. Sites I've created on blogger, wordpress.com and a dozen other sites all get indexed and listed in Google as a backlink--ALWAYS. RARELY do my articles in the article directories get listed as a backlink even though the articles are indexed by Google.

Is that the experience of the rest of you? I've added backlinks to my articles so they're all pr0 and not N/A. Still they don't show up on Google.

Are we wasting our time on the article directories? My only reason for adding articles to a few of the directories is for variety, but I'm wondering if it's even worth all the hours it takes. Adding the articles to my site gets them indexed and listed and is beginning to seem to be a better use of my time.

Are they not showing up in Google's Web Master Tools?

If not I see it quite frequently that Web Master Tools will show quite a few more backlinks than what the Big G shows publicly.

Just because they're not shown publicly, doesn't mean Google isn't taking them into account.

In my experience unique articles are still a great source of backlinks and even possibly relevant traffic, especially after these latest round of updates.

    Hey Carl,

Article directories are quite good for link building. They have positive affect on search engine rankings. These article directories always work for me. Just make sure you submit your articles to high PR and do follow article directories.
