      Toshiba,

      No it's definitely NOT TRUE.

Good keywords are only a tiny portion of what it takes to be successful in online sales. If they were 70% of the puzzle, we'd all be millionaires.

I've never heard of a word making a purchase. I always thought money came from people. I'd place heavy odds on the person saying that either sold you a product on SEO or is trying/going to try to sell you a product on SEO.

If you're going to perform SEO, keywords are important. The whole 70% thing though? I'd like to see the study that backs that up.

LOL at the fodder that's here.

Keywords are something you aim to own, own "chicken soup" and you are far less likely to profit than if you own the SERPS for "buy chicken soup now online with my credit card"

Chosing a low competition keyword with a good enough search volume per month is necessary if you are building a site specifically to get a high search engine rank when someone searches that specific keyword. But those sites will likely not have a very long life expectancy because Google changes its ranking algorithm often.
I think there are better business models than this to be honest.

I would imagine that good keywords are important. Right up there with being able to write for the keyword, use the proper images for the keyword, find other other keywords that can relate to it, building a list a around a keyword...

My point is that it's all part of the puzzle.
