Too many internal links

So I ran an audit on a prospective client's website and SEMmoz is saying that the website has too many internal links, and that it is a high priority.

I haven't had to deal with this issue much with previous clients and am hoping to get some insight on how critical it is that this gets fixed.

The website has 485 pages indexed on Google and has 270 internal links.

I have a conference call with the prospective client in 45 minutes. What insight do you Warriors have for me?

Your advice and feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

I've never heard of this being a problem? If there are hyperlinks linking inner pages together that can only help the user experience.

I'm not sure I completely trust SeoMoz's suggestions. I had them for awhile, and wasn't impressed. I find warriorforum to provide far more helpful info. I've never heard of this before either.

If moz thinks 270 internal links spread out over 485 pages is too much, moz is junk.

      ROTFLMAO!

I have said time and time again, SEOmoz has their own agenda...

I have never heard of having too many internal links...

Google cautions about more than 100 per page, but only
      because of user experience.

In fact, internal linking is golden.

Not sure if SEOmoz was thinking something entirely different, however.
Maybe they were talking about, per page.

If you had 485 pages, you would have a minimum total
of internal links at 485. If not, man your site structure is
complete junk. The total should be thousands, like maybe
      50 per page.

Again, maybe SEOmoz was talking about something else. Like
linking structure. Or maybe 270 were multiple links to the
same page that were on the same page.

That's why it's difficult to answer questions like this when one
knows nothing of the context of the problem.

That number is fine. Even on the low end compared to some of my sites.

Play it by ear. Does the number of innerlinks make any of the articles more difficult to read, or is it distracting? That's basically where I draw the line. Any third party program is working off of conjecture and guesswork for the most part anyway.

I don't think having too many internal links is much of a problem. In fact it helps in user experience - it must be a glitch or some sort. Try again!

Agree with other Warriors. It is the outgoing links that are the bigger problem.

If internal links are designed for ease of visitors then no problem. If created for search engines then yes a problem as Google no longer needs such intra-linking to find the pages and you CAN loose your link juice within your pages.

Thanks for the feedback warriors. I didn't think that this was an issue that needed to be addressed, but I wanted to make sure so that I can move forward with the client.

Again, thanks for all the feedback. It's greatly appreciated.

You're probably reading it wrong. Moz will issue a warning if any single internal page has more than 100 links per page.

It is just a warning and in some cases it is fine to exceed "100 links per page rule". So it is safe to ignore unless you have some insane number of links on a page.

Just know that generally the less links on a given page the better. Having less links on a page (like your homepage or categories) allows more page rank to trickle down your site. Tiered Structure > Flat Structure
