    • Does that mean that website with .com domain
will have much better position in google than .net website,
supposed that all other variables are same?
  • Interesting point, i guess you would have to say yes. The location of your hosting is also a consideration and massively affect rankings. Id strongly advise you get your site hosted in the country which is your main target demographic.
  • From what I've heard web surfers are a lot more comfortable with .com domain names. Besides most people believe domain names end in .com always.
  • a .com might take longer to properly index, Google runs more spam checks on them than any other suffix and you run a higher chance of being sandboxed.

But I think it really comes down to the type of site you plan to run and your intentions for that site.. if it's a commercial site then yes go with a .com

If it's a non profit site then a .org would be best

.net if it's part of a network of sites

.biz if it's B2B (business to business)

.info if it's an information site

  • In my experience, domain extension doesn't help SEO at all. Although it affects SEO indirectly. For example, people types .com instead of .net. You lose backlinks that way ;-)
  • From the search engines point of view, a .net is as good as a .com. The only benefits a .com will be from a user point of view.
  • There is not much difference between a .com and .net from an SEO point of view.
  • You have to SEO slower on a .com to avoid being thought of as a spam site. Build your content slowler and generate backlinks slower.

Over the course of a couple of years it doesn't matter much but when you're a new site it does.
  • I agree, there is no difference.

I own dozens of domain names and I have over 8 years of experence as a web developer.

All domain names have an "equal" chance.
  • no difference whatsoever from the search engines point of view. You may however find it harder to build quality links to a .info for example, as other webmasters tend to view that extension as the first choice for spammers.
