Odd Google Rank Change

I recently had a very good ranking on my site in the top ten search results of Google. Then, about a month ago I decided to add a privacy policy statement on my site. Now, my home page has fallen off the top 500 in Google.

What could be going on here? I haven't done any linking or back-linking changes - just the page addition. Why would a privacy policy do this?

  • Hi Essive,

Rankings change frequently, chances are you privacy page had nothing to do with it.

It's very common for folks to think that when their rank changes, it was caused by whatever they did last, however sometimes it's just Google updating their index or algorithm.

    • Very right... I have the same things to say!

Focus on link building and conmtent building.

Content is not only the king... its the kong... the queen, president, Prime minister, cheif minister of the internet

  • Thanks for everyone's responses. Indeed I did move back up to #8 in Google on a natural search key phrase with 149,000,000 results. That's great!
  • In the meantime, ensure that you have applied the nofollow tag to your privacy page... and any other non-money pages you may have.

  • I lost a pagerank on the last update, and did nothing different, while a site i havn't touched for 3 months has got a predicted PR2 up from PR1 on the next update!
  • Andy, is that something you typically do - add nofollow to terms, disclaimers, etc pages? I hadn't heard that before.
  • My website is very similar to yours... I mean it was hihgly rank and it dropp a whole lot. most of the guys here then when ask them was the same as Dburk. It's the algorithm of Big G. doing the trick. Don't worry it will come back.

    Thanks
    Oling
