Magento Multi store SEO strategy, advice needed

Hi all,

This is my first post here, I hope it is in the right place. Thanks in advance for helping me out!

I am currently setting up a large webshop with a lot of products. lets say I sell everything that has to do with photocameras.
The domain name of the website has nothing to do with photography but is chosen for branding reasons, for example: abcde.com

I am wondering if it could be interesting to create niche sites next to the main website, for example: photocameracases.com
Here I will only show the photo camera cases product group, but the descriptions, titles etc from the products will be copied 1:1 from the main site.

I will give the niche sites a different IP-address but will link them to the "main site" to attend the vistor on the fact that when he visits the niche site he sees that the website is part of the "main site".

Naturally the keyword rich urls will rank higher then the non-keyword rich urls and as Matt Cutts explained on YouTube, Google will never give a penalty for duplicate content but shows the "best one" of the duplicates, with this in mind I don't really see any disadvantages.

Am I thinking too easy or could this be a valid strategy?

Thanks!

Its a fair strategy however not one I would advise. keyword rich or emd's dont have the ranking power they once did so you would have to put a fair amount of effort into ranking it. For a long term prospective google will continue to knock strategies liek that so while it may work for a few months it will get slapped. google cannot take away your brand and the successful ecommerce operations since peguin are companies that have built a brand. My advice is to spend more time building your brand and less time on strategies liek these which may or may not make a profit.

It's an interesting thought. EMD's do help somewhat with ranking, though as anonymous99 stated they don't have nearly the ranking power they did 2 years ago.

One note, even though you are planning on sharing with your visitors that they are on a part of the main site...this still sounds very similar to doorway pages.

So unless you're willing to add valuable content and build quality backlinks to each of the mini sites, you should probably focus your attention on your main site.
