Choosing Keywords Correctly

If a keyword has no search using the google keyword tool either globally or locally should I still try to rank for it?
Working with a local client. Although there are no searches his competitors are listed on the first page and there is paid advertising on the first page.
Should I still try to rank the keywords?
Feedback is greatly appreciated.

    I would try and use an alternative keyword tool just to be sure there are no searches for it. Sometimes the Google tool can be misleading. If in fact you cannot find any data on the word, using it in copy would depend on its importance to the company. For instance if it relates to a product or brand name you would still want to include it in copy and perhaps even keyword tags or meta descriptions where appropriate however it might not be an SEO focus.

    That being said, use all available SEO related space for keywords that do have search volume before you use ones that don’t.
