Where Do You Get Your SEO Advice?

I'm curious as to where YOU get your SEO advice. Not because I want to touch base or learn SEO, but some of the clients I get have some of the most odd requests on what they think is necessary for SEO.

For Example:
This person wants a 500 word article with 6 different keywords optimized in it.
One keyword is to be 3% density
The rest are to be 2% density

5 Keywords at 2% density = 50
One keyword at 3% density = 15

So, he wants an article with 65 keywords in it and it's supposed to sound natural in a 500 word article

Additionally, there's supposed to be FOUR H2 Headers.

That's just one example of something you have to deliver because ultimately, the customer's always right.

So this begs the question, where in the world are some people finding their SEO advice or reading up on SEO?

Trial and error...which turn into trial and "success" if the results are positive

The good thing about SEO is that it changes all the time.

The bad thing about SEO is that it changes all the time.

When I was a professional software developer we would always get clients that knew just enough to make the most idiotic requests, the solution is to educate them from the initial communication. You will find the smarter you make your client the more logical his or her requests will be.

Trying to educate some people usually comes off as an insult to them no matter how you put out the message.

Some people are set in their ways and there's ONLY ONE way to do something. Oh well, it happens, I'm just curious to see what other people say.

Honestly, I am usually not worried about those "kind" of people. Let them go be a hassle to someone else. Just look at the requirements stated in the OP, do you really want to try to write that article? If they know it all then let them do it.

There is so much stuff out there, this is bound to happen. All you half to do is tell the collect it will not be best for them. If they disagree ask them, who does this as a business/career.

SEOMoz is a pretty solid source for learning. They're white hat and pretty objective about a lot of stuff.

Obviously each teacher/author has their own biases and agendas as well though so as with any info source take it with a pinch of salt.

The best thing you can do in SEO is to question everything, never blindly follow advice, always analyse.

Just don't take clients like that. It's real simple. There is nothing wrong with saying no. I turn down more clients than I actually take on. When someone gives me garbage like that, I know it is just going to be more headache than it is worth.

Anyone following crap about keyword density is living in the 90's.

Put a price on your time, and deliver what they want if the price matches how long it is going to take. Also I've found that people with ultra-specific demands typically require a lot of post delivery coddling until it's complete. If you don't feel like doing it, turn them down.

As far as where I get my SEO advice, it's in the data. Listening to advice on a forum is great, but without testing it out and looking at the results everything should just be taken as a theory and not as fact in your head.

It's not so much an, I need advice thread. I pretty much write on the side now due to having other businesses now that I run.

It's just always so funny to me to read some people's requirements or what they want. I always turn down cheapasses and people with insanely ridiculous requirements that just aren't worth the time.

It's like some people find a random blog in the middle of nowhere on the internet that tells them that these are real requirements. That or they just make them up. I write for something to do and as side cash, I could always game, but I think I've grown out of gaming full time.

I used to be a CIO and powerful department head had very strong ideas on what kind of projects they wanted and when you tried to educate them they got more entrenched in their thinking so you did what they asked and when the solution failed they got sudden amnesia and began insisting that they never asked for those specs. The best defence for this amnesia was to put one's objection on record giving them no wiggle room to redefine history on their terms.

How do I get my SEO advice?

I've found 4 members of warrior forum that truly know what the hell they're talking about. All 4 of them are successful at what they do, and have proven track records.

They post regularly here on the boards and pour out the best SEO advice on the entire internet. I know because I haunted all of the most popular forums for SEO for over 5 years, lurking and learning all I could about proper, factual methods that increase website traffic in meaningful ways. At the end of the day it's all about ROI for me. Does it work? Is it safe (panda-penguin)? Does it make me money?

    OH YES IT DOES!

    Here's what you do...

Create a folder in your favorite places - Name it "Profiles"

Go to Warrior Forum and find a post by Mike Friedman. Click on his name and go to his profile. Save his profile page to your newly created favorites folder titled "Profiles"

The other 3 profiles you want in your favorite places "Profiles Folder" are "Yukon" "Mike Anthony" "Niko".

First thing I do every morning is to go to the favorites folder "Profiles" and click the link named Mike Friedman. Then I hit the statistics tab in his profile, after that I click the find all posts by mike friedman link.

Warrior forum saves every post we make starting with the latest to the earliest. So at my leisure I can see every post on every thread created by these 4 guys listed in hierarchical order beginning last to first since the day they started here.

I do this every morning with all 4 of these great guys, and they're giving it up for nothing other than the fact that they have a passion for helping others succeed at a very difficult and sometimes confusing endeavor.

A great freebie that comes along with all of the great advice they give, is opening the day reading the funny/snarky way they bust the balls of people giving outrageously stupid SEO advice. They're rarely kind or gentle about it and I think that's just great. Peoples financial livelihoods are at stake on these boards and a lot of people giving bad advice just don't seem to get that.

If you do this.. Stalk these guys daily for 90 days. You will learn what to do, and sometimes more importantly what not to do, to get your website into the top 3 spots on googles page one for your chosen search terms... Any other SERP position is unacceptable when it comes to ROI.

This is rocket science. Listen to the rocket scientists.

    Wrong.

You're the expert, not the client. Its up to you to provide the solution, based on your knowledge and experience. Not provide a solution based on what the customer thinks should be done.

You should be more selective about who you choose to work with.

If I had a customer tell me how to do my job, Id tell em to hit the bricks.

People are probably finding their SEO advice from different sources. It's important to not have your articles overly optimized, but each article should be more or less optimized so that they appear natural overall.

Mostly from testing myself, chatting with others in the industry on Skype, going to conferences and speaking with people face to face, and reading forums.

I never really learned anything "ground breaking" on SEOMoz or Search Engine Land, but I've found Microsite Masters Keyword Tracker - Daily Rank Tracking for Search Engine Optimization to be pretty helpful this year.
