Same Keyword on Multiple Pages

Is it a bad idea to have a single keyword on two pages? Note that I generally try to keep 3-5 keywords per page.

For example, assume I have the keyword "Boston Chemistry Tutor" in the content on my "services" page. I also would really like it on my bio page. I feel as though I should just pick the best page that matches the keyword, because it seems that I'd have two of my own pages competing against each other.

Is that a correct assessment?

    • When people have a "niche" their multiple pages talk about almost the same things. That doesn't mean those pages are competing with each other. I don't think Search Engines are that particular about competing pages depending on the keyword density in each.

      In my opinion, you should be okay using almost same keywords in multiple pages.
  • I think it's okay. If someone find you on your services page great, or they might find you on your home page. As long as they find you, that's what matters.
  • Each page wants to focus on a main keyword, or theme. It doesn't mean that you cannot mention that word at all on any of your pages. All your pages should be related by niche anyway, so don't limit yourself or your content. You can include your other phrases / keywords on any page you wish, and then simply hyperlink them to the keywords main page. These will then be contextual links which users can use to navigate through your site. Good for SEO!

    • I have not found that a problem. I use 2-3 keywords in my header php code
      that is the header on all pages. I don't even change the title, as that
      is a catch-all phrase zeroing in on my content. Since doing all this
      with footer, header, etc. php code, it makes it very easy to update or
      add a page. It may be slightly better to do a different header for each
      page, I but I feel the simplicity is worth it. Also, the content on
      each page must speak for itself, right?

  • hmm... I tried it in some of my sites, and it is very helpful! Having double listing in search results from a single keyword really drives traffic. There is no bad effect and disadvantage with this technique. Just make sure it is relevant to the page that you are optimizing.
  • With key pages you should have unique titles. The title is one of the most important ranking factors for onpage optimisation.

    Providing the page content is relevant to the title, it can have a big impact.
