I'm planning on temporarily moving overseas to work on some projects, but i wanted to look into some internet marketing stuff in my free time. I was wondering, how much differently is SEO in another language, do i use the same techniques, and what do i do if i want to support English and another language together on the site? I'm confused as to how to tackle this project and cover the international search market.

I think seo in foreign language is pretty easy. You would be amazed how easy it is to rank for 1 word keyword in other language then English. I have a friend who earns $xx,xxx monthly by only targeting different region/lang then USA, Canada and UK. He hasn't even updated his site in over couple years and still ranking in top posting and earning all that money.

But do you apply SEO strategies in the other language? And how do your alternate languages, between English and the language, if you plan on using WordPress?

Hire a translator like I do with my projects or use some translating software but you should know that you will not get quality translation with a software.

Great question! At large it depends on the language and the country.

There four search markets in the world which are quite different. The reason - Google is not the most popular search engine there, or at least there's a big national player on the market.

        Here are these countries:

        1. Russia. Here Yandex is more popular than Google. While SEO principles are pretty much the same, i.e. links, content and on page factors matter, there are some peculiarities when it comes to Yandex ranking algorithms, metrics, the market itself, semantics and such.

        2. Czech Republic. Here Seznam and Google are neck to neck. Details are summarized in this interview with Seznam representative.

        3. China. Baidu is the absolute leader here. When I researched this topic about a year ago, there was an opinion that paid results would influence search results. There's also lots of other stuff which is pretty different.

        4. South Korea. Naver is more popular than Google here. Read more about Korean SEO.

To sum it up, if you aren't planning to do SEO in Russian, Czech, Chinese and Korean, simply play the Google rules, SEO will be the same, just remember to track rankings in Google regional versions.

Your question isn't very clear. Homever personally I use buffer sites as I find it's a lot easier to build backlinks on English language, I can't simply slap random foreign keywords on english content. Build few legit sites around your money site with foreign language/content/keywords and hit those sites with english backlinks. It may take longer but in the end it's still less expansive than going with the only legit route.

You'd use the same techniques for SEO in another language as you'd do with English. It just may be a bit easier to rank for certain keywords as competition may not be as fierce.

As far as handling multiple language on the same site - you can simply use subdomains for each language.

I did this a while back for one of my sites. Translated everything into Spanish; then linked to the translated site (subdomain) from the main English site. To this day, the Spanish version ranks on the 1st page of G for related keywords... and I sold the site about 4 years ago
