trying to rank onto first page with new domain is Not easy these days as used to be but if you try with expired or expiring domain that has good PR it would be much better this way the rest is content and quality backlinks...

I'm sure it would be kind of hard to find a website domain that is somewhat related to the company name. My client has an education company that sells about $2500 per class to get licensed so they can make good money in their field.

Well, I would check the competition level and then build links like the competition is at least 1 level higher then in reality. It's a good way to almost insure you will be at the top 3 pos.

Don't ask how I would build the links - I just outsource it...

First check competitors backlink profiles and identify the way of making backlinks to those sites. You may find some useful resources to get free backlinks. Then prepare unique content and make Tier 1 links to your main site. This should be done for few days. Don't make same kind of backlinks in same day. You need to get these backlinks indexed, so Social Bookmarking, Social Signals will help you to do it.

I use https://ahrefs.com/ to check backlinks of my competitors. Don't do same method of competitors. Identify the pattern what they are doing

In a nutshell this poster is spot on. Find high PR contextual links and make sure your on page SEO follows all the rules Google wants.

Good keyword research, on page seo and backlink is the formula to rank higher in Google. If your website is new it will take more time and effort.

Assuming the keywords are not that difficult to dominate....how long would you expect it would take to get the average website in the first couple of spots on Google for the certain keywords. I know every website is different and how it depends on the techniques that one uses to get the words ranked highly ect..

But assuming we are doing everything top notch....what is a reasonable expectation in terms of time to get these keywords ranked on the first page? I'm just wondering if it is better to do pay per click instead.

Thoughts?/Opinions?

Is it local? I would suggest they start out doing pay per click while the site is put in place and rises in the search engine ranking. They will feel like they are getting somewhere right from the start.

Then they can lighten up on the ppc, according to how well their lead generation is doing on their website.

Although you can get to first page sooner, I give most of my medium competition keywords 3 months to 6 months to get to first page (then i am not dissappointed). There is the honeymoon period, then it can bounce around a while after as well. Google seems to like an aged domain = more stability.

There is more you will have to do of course, but that answers one question.

Ok, then ignore most of what people have suggested here. First thing to do is to generate a list of relevant keywords to the market. Most of my local clients are targeting anywhere from about 30 keywords to over 100. Usually I take larger lists of keywords for local clients because they are all pretty closely related and have smaller search volume. So we are going with the shotgun approach and trying to rank for everything relevant.

Next thing is a site audit. When I do a site audit I'm mainly looking for a few things that will screw up rankings...

broken links
lots of content in Flash or Javascript (search engines struggle to read both)
duplicate title tags
duplicate content/canonical issues
useless pages
useless links (they bleed pagerank)

Local SEO is largely driven by citations. Citations consist of a NAP, Name, Address, Phone number.

You would want to have the client claim their Google Places (now Google+ for business) listing or create one if there is not one in existence. They will want to complete it 100%. Business description, hours, pictures, video, etc.

Then they will want to claim or build listings in popular local business directories like Bing, Yahoo, Merchant Circle, Yelp, Foursquare, Localeze, iBegin, etc. There are about 60 of these I use. This is the first place they will acquire citations.

Next, you want to dig in to the search engines and find all the citations their top competitors have acquired. Many times in local communities there are a lot of community websites where you can also get a listing.

I recommend them having their address on every page of their site. They can just stick it in the footer. The address on their webpage and in all these directories should exactly match the address used in Google+.

Depending on the level of competition, doing all of this will usually get them to show up in the Google Places box in search results.

Next, to secure and improve their rankings I look to acquire high quality links to their website. Link diversity is bullshit. If an SEO tries to tell you they do blog comments, wiki links, profile links, or any other garbage like that because you need to have a diverse link profile, run from them. You need diversity in your link sources (how many pages link to you), but not in the type of links.

For local clients especially, I like to use SEO as a form of branding, so I will try to rank multiple web properties for them. The goal is for their website to be #1, but I also want things like a Facebook page, a YouTube video, and/or a blog to show up on page one of the search results. When people see 2-3 listings for the same company, it gives them the impression that this is the authority in their market for their search.

That's probably a good starting point.

Chris,

Some of the suggestions here are correct but they provide you with little information and not an actual plan. Here is the step by step on how I initiate an SEO campaign for my clients.

Step
1. Find out what products/services your client sells and what makes them unique compared to their competitors. Then use that information to find valuable keywords that will actually bring traffic and sales/leads.
2. When you have the keywords find out how much estimated search traffic those keywords have by going to https://adwords.google.com/o/KeywordTool
3. Use those keywords in the Title tags and meta descriptions on each relevant page of the website for example, home page, services, About, Free estimate form etc.
However, make sure that you are writing those for visitors not just search engines (make it look appealing)
4. Add Google Analytics or some sort of tracking to the website if not already set up.
5. Add Google web master tools to check for 404 errors, site speed, and any kind of crawl errors.
6. Make sure there is a social media presence for your website such as twitter, Google +, and Facebook profiles.
7. Build relevant backlinks through manual blog commenting, posting on relevant forums, guest post etc.
8. Create blogs, websites, Squidoo/hubpages lens about your clients website and link to the main site.
9. Write and distribute a Press Release (big traffic increase)
10. Create and update the main website with well written unique content. (Also verify that the website isn't using duplicate content on multiple pages).

Then make sure you promote your blogs, website, Squidoo/hubpage on social media accounts/bookmarks.

Rinse and repeat

I mean, I know even top SEO expertise need help sometimes, but from your replies and questions it seems like you are clueless about SEO and I just wonder why you are charging people to do something that you dont even know the basics of it?...

You know whats funny...I don't do video....but I offer video services and I get paid for it. I"m like a general contractor that brings everything together. Don't want to get into a business education here but you get my point.

My purpose of asking these questions is to get the knowledge necessary so I can talk intelligently to an outsourcer to outsource this job.

Never rely on software to do SEO and linkbuilding for your client. I'm pretty sure you're aware of the fundamentals of SEO... So just do the SEO the right way and i'm pretty sure you can rank your client's website maybe within a month or two!!
