Hi there

After doing work for a clients site of mine I was doing well for its main keyword on the first page around 5th position.

Then a few months it dropped to like 6th page and hasn't improved. The rest of the site is still ranking just as well and is 1st when searching company name.

I did buy some paid links a while back and was working ok but I may have over done it.

I tried contacted the owner of the links site and he only answered me once but never deleted the links I requested.

What can I do to fix this issue?

Thanks

you said a few month's it dropped to like 6th page and hasn't improved since, so you said that site drop the ranking a few month ago ? if this is happen a few month ago then is possible happen somewhere in April or May this year if Yes then is most likely during Google panda when Google sent over 700K messages to webmaster for unnatural links or due to Google penguin..specially sites that used private blog networks as you know that Google really went on rampage against it and slap many network out of business...

What I've started to do is dilute my anchor text and use a variety of other links sources to bring those sites back.

You still didn't answer the question when exactly did site drop the ranking in April ? ( when Google Launches "Penguin Update" Targeting Webspam In Search Results Apr 24, 2012 they sent over 700K message for unnatural links and they crack down on many blog networks) or May ? When....

        Hi,

I see no one has replied to this thread in a while but a similar situation has happened to me but for only 1 keyword which is a bit strange... originally the website ranked on the 1st page of google for this specific keyword and now it's on page 8, the very same site has held top rankings for all other keywords on the same page for months... is this potentially down to over optimizing for a specific keyword? The ranking drop took place around the time of the penguin update but no notification was received in google webmaster tools identifying why this loss of rankings for 1 keyword may have happened.

I fear I had over optimized for this keyword but I always use a large variety of keywords... like I say the rest of the keywords have held their rank but this keyword which was the main keyword won't recover and I've never known a site to be penalized for only 1 keyword before...?

        All advice is appreciated,

        Thanks,

        Ceri.

For removing backlinks, you can use disavow tool which is recently introduced by Google..

Use this tool when you are certain about removing any particular link, if you don't have idea which link you should remove and which link you should keep then it is better don't use this tool.

You need to work on your branding first so that you can neutralize your negative link building efforts. Keep working on multiple URL at a same time to maintain the URL diversity and try to use key phrase instead of keyword to maintain the keyword diversity. The process will take some time and helps you to get back the ranking in couple of days.
