will adding more content to good ranking post hurt its position?

Basically I have my site ranking #2 in google with a sticky post along with a video and some interactive stuff for a good user experience.

I also have (5) 1000+ word articles on the site but the sticky is very short and i wanted to add more content to the sticky which originally was only an introduction to my site.

I want to keep whats there and just add more content to that sticky and make it an improvement from what it is but i'm not sure if I do that will it affect my rank negatively?
Or cause me to drop in rank for a while before hopefully coming back to where is now?

    It could go either way.

Adding more can muck things up for your desired keywords,
but perhaps boost it for others.

My advice is don't mess with stuff that's ranking.

The sticky has my keyword in it although because it's short (under 100 words) I didn't want it to look too over-optimised because I have adsense on it. I have noticed that it does bounce between the 2nd through 4th spot every so often and was thinking that if I updated it and added more content then maybe it would stop bouncing.

Paul i guess if he is making changes and adding some fresh content then it may not be a problem in ranking.

The problem is the fresh content is on the same page and not on a different one.

Your content word has nothing to do with your bouncing rate on the SERP.

Focus on building strong back link to your site will be more beneficial.

Like Paul said, Google is ranking the page based on the content that is there now. Adding to it, could improve your ranking, but it could also drastically reduce it. There is no way to know for sure.

Build more relevant internal pages focused on the same subject as the already ranked page, focus on ranking a 2nd page for the same keyword, you'll end up with a stronger network of internal pages (use proper internal links). Don't spam out your pages with the target keyword.

Okay I'm glad I asked before doing anything. Thanks for the speedy replies and good advice, I will leave it alone and add more relevant pages.

Yukon, you mentioned proper internal links? I take it this is where I use my keyword in the next few articles to point to the ranking page?

Yes, keyword anchor-text pointing to the page your trying to rank.

On the supporting pages, only mention the keyword once or twice (don't stuff keywords), then mention relevant keywords on the same supporting pages, before & after the anchor-text keyword/link.

Actually I will offer a counter-opinion from my own experience. My site Toyota Hilux Vigo 2013 2012 New 2011 2010 2009 2008 Minor Change Toyota Vigo Thailand Toyota Fortuner Nissan Navara 4x4 Pickup Truck Dealer Exporter SUV Thailand Australia NZ UK Dubai Dealer started doing very well from its inception. At its start I only had one 100 word article on it and it was on page 1 for all the keywords included in the article. I then decided to take advantage of Google's romance with the page and first fleshed out the article further and all the new keywords started to rank higher as well. I then added two more articles and all three articles are still ranking high.

If a particular page has high PR and high SERPs then go ahead and add more content to it but don't go overboard. Avoid techniques that awaken Panda or Penguin and you will be fine.

I was wondering the same thing in regards to my website pages and trying to add to them in hopes of boosting my rankings a bit

I suggest that you just build more pages in your website's network and start building more links. I don't think that changing the page slightly will have a huge effect on your rankings. If you did other things to optimize your site for your keyword like building relevant backlinks, then it should stay there. After all, offpage is always more important than onpage. Tell me how it will turn out.

Like others have said, it's possible changing page content could mess with a SERP position, then again it might not.

Example, I have one site & the Index page ranks for a keyword regardless how often I change the Index page content, page title, etc..., because I built a lot of internal links on a lot of internal pages with that keywords [exact] anchor-text.

Generally, if the site is already ranking highly, like this one is, I would not touch the content. If you were on page 2 or beyond and really wanted to change the content, then I would say go ahead. Nobody knows the page exists anyhow. You have nothing to lose.
