Optimising a footer for a local business

Hi Everyone,

I am currently working on the footer for my website which is for a local landscaping business and I was wondering whether it would be beneficial, from an seo point of view, to include a list of the areas that I cover? So under a header 'areas covered' I would list the towns in my local area.

Is it acceptable practice to do this or would google not like it?

Thanks,

Will

If it is a few areas, I would do it. If you are going to list 25 towns, I would be a little more hesitant.

I completely understand your concerns. Ive been building local business websites for many years but I have to say I have never seen a negative effect to rankings using similar methods. On the same note though, there is not a huge SEO benefit to doing so either especially in current times. I would certainly list some of the local areas in which your business provides a service, and as long as it doesnt look spammy to you - it is likely not to flag any concerns with the search engines. I have personally found that listing the sub areas first followed by the greater area and surrounding areas - reads better and allows you to get in a few local search terms aswell.

The normal listing of 10 keyword links in the footer of your site just looks plain spammy in my opion and can be better represented by making the description readable to the human eye and even useful.

I live in the UK - and one such footer description style I like to use is :

Mylocal business specialises in ** Main Keyword ** and has been providing ** Related Keywords ** to residents in ** local areas ** and through out ** Main County ** and surrounding Counties of ** surrounding counties ** since 1990

So using lets say Wedding Cakes as an example and yummi cakes as the business name.

....Yummi Cakes specialises in Custom Wedding Cakes for your special day, and have been providing on site wedding cake creation, wedding cup cake decoration and wedding cutlery to happy couples in Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and through out Dorset and the surrounding counties of Hampshire and Wiltshire since 1990

I hope this is of some help.
        Kind regards Jamie
        Thanks Jamie

The main reason I ask is because a lot of my competitors that rank the highest in google have footers where they have the keyword and have listed lots of towns and then created a page for each town. So for example:

        london block paving
        london driveways
        london landscaping
        london fencing

Then done the same as the above for several other towns/cities with the same keywords. When you click on the links there is a paragraph describing their services for each town

To me, this just appears very spammy and I would imagine should be avoided??? But why are these companies ranking so highly?
