  • Ranking is based on your SEO activity and not really on keyword. Type "Make Money Online" without quotes and tell me how many websites on the first page having "Make Money Online" in their domains. Nothing. But because the ranked sites are SEOed properly, domains having the exact keywords are outranked.
  • for get quotes and all that rubbish

    make sure your own google.com

type the keyword in how most people would (just the word nothing else)

and then see what comes up in the top 10, this is your competition

you can also use traffic travis which is free to check the top 10 because you sometimes get personalized results on your own comp

the most important thing is not competition or traffic but make sure there are plenty of buyers in that niche and that people are spending money on advertisement ie google adwords

no ads = no money in the niche , so don`t even think about going for it

Install the free seo quake toolbar for firefox and check the PR of the sites in the top 10, the higher the average PR the tougher it is too rank in most cases. Real basic but works great 9 out of 10 times.

If you want to do it properly you need to sign up for SEOmoz so that you can look at the Page Authority of the top 10 sites, much more reliable.

  • The top ten site on google first page of that keyword is really what you need to worry about. They are your competitors. Dont worry too much about the search results, rather, go to traffic travis or market samurai, find out your competitor, their Backlinks, PR, exact keywords in title/desc/URL. Traffic Travis gives you an answer to whether or not you should go ahead with the keyword (easy - difficult rankings) If you don't have these tools, i use serpiq.com they have free keyword analysis for the first 6 keywords when you sign up. They are pretty acurate.

  • I agree with Danillion55, definitely have a look at Market Samurai, it's a fantastic tool when it comes to market and keyword research
  • 'Test Review' is a very competitive keyword without the quotes. If you want to rank for a keyword quickly try to target long tailed keywords such ' Microsoft test review'. HTH

    • This is what do not understand, If I was to use Microsoft test review' as my keywords would I out rank websites with high PR rank and quality backlinks that were using "test review as their keyword?

  • How did you determine it was low competition? The reason I ask is that's where most beginners come unstuck.

You'll find that the case for most keywords.
