Which is better?

Say for the fitness niche for example.

I mean Google is still the most popular website in the world but people probably spend more time on Twitter/Facebook nowadays.

Also the penguin update hit some sites hard.

Both have their own importance. Do proper search engine optimization for your website to gain page and domain authority and search engine rankings. You can get a lot of user/audience with social media optimization. You need to add or follow relevant fans or followers if you want to get relevant traffic with less bounce rate.

There is no relation between SEO and SMO with Penguin Updates. Google will not penalize for concentrating more and getting more traffic from Social Media.

For quick traffic you need Social Media websites

  If anything SEO is becoming more and more important while also more effective. The Google updates are purely killing off the low-end SEO outsourcers who don't have a clue what they are doing. For corporate-level work, the SEO world is booming and its easier than ever with less competition.
