Panda, Penguin, EMD penalties..what next!?

Looks like EMD's took a big hit. I had several EMD's and all but two with decent backlink profiles disappeared for their top positions.

My guess is spun content and low quality Web 2's used for backlinking are next.

I can spot most spun content in a second so i'm guessing it's possible to algorithmically test for this. A few grammar and reading quality score algorithms already exist.

I can't see low quality web 2's used for backlinking lasting much longer either - no social engagement in the form of twitter, facebook, or comments, very few pages of content, no backlinks or a huge amount of automated backlinks.

The idea that you can safely point massive amounts of low quality links to tiers and get good results long term doesn't make sense to me either. If you know they can harm your main site what point is there in pointing them to any site. Furthermore all of those junk links point back to your main site in the end - it's only a matter of time before Matt Cutts starts penalising this.

  • They should start targeting those Facebook notes pages that seem to getting ever popular, utter garbage
  • What's next... niche penalties, asking questions penalties, why not using GA penalties and so on that every one will pissed off.....
  • If you learn from this.. being next would be not worried about updates

The next is you have to put only fresh content on your site and build brand name of your company and nothing more than this.

Also, you need to do on-page optimization perfectly this is only the way we can do otherwise, content and popularity of your site which is really too hard, complex, time consuming, spending money etc.
  • I spam the **** out of web 2.0's and it still works.

My spun content is so good it cant be detected. Well some of it can... but if im using ultra spinable articles they cant detect it, they never will.. it would simply require to much processing power to do this and cost them to much money.

IMO its just not worth it for them, so i think your safe with good spun content for a while.

Google will always target certain things, when they devalue one thing, they make something else more valuable. This is a game, never forget that. Google will always be able to be gamed.

I know you have had your sites hit and are now in a negative mindset, there are two ways you can take this. Either continue to be negative or do something about it.

You have the power. Good luck dude.
  • What's next? The end of the world on 12/12/12.

  • First off all, Matt Cutts lies all the time to hide the true intentions of Google.

Anyway, SEO will always work, as it is purely the act of promoting your website and making it look popular to search engines. High-quality SEO will ALWAYS work, and it always has, that's why big companies who use real SEO's aren't complaining.

Do you think Nike came onto WarriorForum and said, hey let's find the cheapest SEO gig, here's one for $10 a month. And then expected real results?

That's the reason many people are doing great during the updates, while most fail. If you can't do high-end SEO, then don't promise it to people.

    • I agree with your first statement, matt cutts lies all the time.

Thats where it ends. Sure people just buying $5 gigs arent likely to get anywhere. But are you looking at the serps? I am spamming big time and making bank right now.

Im tired of white hat gurus saying "do this" and "do that"... when i am doing the opposite and i am making bank. The crappy links work, and they work damn well if you know what youre doing...

Yeah and that's not only from 2 sites that I own myself, that's also from dozens of sites that I heard from people at a private forum.

I'm back in a normal sleeping rhythm again, my days are like 25 hours so each week it's different, that's to keep people confused
  • This EMD thing is part of the general google algo - at last the score. That means it effects the quality ranking at all. If the EMD update gives you a malus, that malus counts as general malus like bad SEO or spam and thats the reason why your whole site goes down. Its nothing counted parted for the keywords.
  • Thats probably true in mass but I can't see Google developing an algo to devalue its own Blogger and they can't open themselves up to even more antitrust issues by devaluing competitors web 2s so its not going to be a knock across the board.

So it will all come down to quality, authority metrics and quantity. Thousands of any one kind of site is bad going forward and as you said thats going to apply eventually to almost any tier level. All Google has to do is lower the Pr and any other kind of juice a site passes if they have that juice from mass spam pointing to that site. Doesn't matter what tier or how many you use they already have that data sitting in their database.

So you are better off with a handful of Web 2.Os that you can do some quality control on and getting quality links to those as well

  • Mattcutts.com

His EMD is doing just fine

pregnancy.co.uk apparently is a poor quality site with crap content

funnny that - Matts site is more important than expectant mothers or perhaps he thinks his content is superior!

its a penalty folks, not the bonus removed.

    • If I go to Google.co.uk, pregnancy.co.uk is ranking #5. It's right behind some pretty big authorities. That seems about right to me.

Seems to be doing just fine.

Oh, and if I go to Google.com... pregnancy.com and pregnancy.org are both on page 1.
  • Yes, you are utterly right. While creating backlings it is important to create quality backlinks. I think 2 to 5 quality backlinks are enough comparing to 100 low quality backlinks.
  • Stop doing fake bullsh*t and you won't have to worry about what comes next.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Interesting that every time the traffic to my main sites in one niche are hit by Google, the traffic to its allied blogspot site goes up!
  • I think it is worth noting that Matt Cutts probably does not lie, but there is no assurance that he is right either. It is kind of unfair to assume that because he might have been wrong he was lying.
  • Want to know what the next update is? I hope its a lizard update
  • I agree Matt does not lie but it is an algo after all. It eventually grinds wheat with chaff so a lot of good sites went down with a couple hundred bad ones.

Next update will target crappy links in the second tier of links. So everyone with their crappy pyramids will get hit and start crying. You know the ones who scream how awesome it works to blast the hell out of your web2.0's and such with Scrapebox and Xrumer. The so-called blackhat guys that actually don't know sh!t how to perform true black hat, that's whats next.

Then in the future when there is more computer processing power we will probably see some very advanced alghorytm that will take care of poor up until reasonably well spun content.

And then I think we've had the worse.
  • I don't view any of those updates as penalties... I view them as Google trying to clean up the junk. I think all this started when Google got called out by the media over the JC Penny drama. I knew Google was going to change a lot of things after that day.

I think Google next improvement will be cleaning up spun and low quality content infestation that is diluting search results with trash.

    • Agreed - autospun content has got to by high on Matt's to do list. With so many WSO services using spun content i'm worried for a lot of warriors who buy these services.

If you see any of these words run a mile: spun, blast, xrumer, scrapebox, pinged, profile links, secret sauce!
  • Google spankings hurt especially before the holidays. It seems ridiculous to penalize EMD, but not spammy spun content.

    • LOL Yes you can definitely imagine it! When People for no reason keep guessing google's next update.

Yes I do agree updates matters but whats the point of over thinking it
  • Its been bad, but if it drives low quality sites down the SERPS for the long run, its all good for us.
  • i am little warried about these update....

Yeah can't blame you wrong on that, and especially if you spend $1k/month on links, better get that network fast!!

  • Before penguin webmasters were safe to be on the gray line but now you have to be on the white line to apply white hat techniques. Even article marketing has been affected a lot.
  • SEO is becoming more of an art rather than science. For 10 long years we had it easy. Google now wants every site to buy their ads to get traffic so they will continue to block all doors for free traffic. Eventually this will backfire at Google as increasingly their searches are full of irrelevant sites. Reminds me of Alta Vista searches before before people began switching to Google in droves.
  • You won't have to worry about what comes next.
