Very high CPC keyword, how to generate traffic without Google?

Hello

I am pretty new to Adsense sites, I have built two which make around £400 a month between them so far, which is some nice additional income!

I was just doing some keyword research with Niche Finder and I have found a UK keyword with a CPC of £36 (that's £ not $) with very high competition and 1000 local searches a month.

Here's the obvious thing though - competition for Google UK rankings for this keyword is pretty high (45 on Niche Finder) and I can tell by looking at the search results, it's going to be a lot of hard work to get into the top ten and I am not confident of ever getting top 3.

This has got me thinking of other ways of getting regular traffic to the site, I mean one or two clicks a day would do me...

I am old-school SEO and not too sure of the best ways to get traffic to a site if you discount Google etc, and how much work/time is involved in setting these up.

If anyone can offer any info on alternative sources of traffic that would work for this, together with money/work required to get results I would be gratefully received.

Is there anyone else targeting very high CPC, and making money with sites that they can't rank on Google due to competition?

    There are also the cheap cpc networks to think of. Some provide a uniform ,05 clicks for all words,,,,,,,think of this as a product that sells at 63 and you could calculate the odds,,,

    • Low cost CPC networks could work! I have had mixed success with Twitter but as you say, I may only need a small number of visitors.

      I was thinking about StumbleUpon but I am not sure you to proceed here. I have spent so many years just focusing on SEO that I have neglected all the other ways to generating targeted traffic.

    • Try to promote your site by uploading videos to Youtube and other similar sites for traffic...

    • One is medical/health and the other is pest control.
  • What ever alternate sources are there.... they are not going to be cheap. Only if an innovative and less known way is found out. It will help.

    The key is watermarks. This is far less easy that Pinterest but it is the best way to get traffic. You should watermark all of your images with some sort of short url. It can be a short domain or a url shortener but it should be memorable because a viewer is going to have to type it in. If you aren't watermarking your pictures, then give up on Instagram.
  • If you've got the dosh, hire some charismatic people to do an entertaining yet informative bi-weekly podcast on the topic. Put that shit on itunes, get some bloggers to talk about it, and then mention your site often in the podcast. That would get some good traffic.
  • While a few have brought up parts of it but if your entire idea or desire is to try to do this without Google then why not completely embrace the social networking side of things. I use Follow Like myself but there are many others. I like this one because the people behind it at least make an effect to keep the code up to date and spans across many of the different networks. Just an idea.

    Based on what you have said, why just use twitter or one other.. hit them all and use the share/retweet/group featurs that can be found in them. This way others are doing the work for you.
