No Index Categories?

Usually, I wouldn't think of no indexing categories, but what happens if you have 50+ categories.

For example, say that the main category is Hi-Fis, and then you list 10 brands in a drop down menu. You then do this for four other product types, such as earphones, stereos etc. Would this be okay?

Of course you can index it. In some cases categories might even rank better than an article for example. It all depends on your on-page optimization for the selected category.

I think noindex'ing categories could really F your site. You are going to end up with a lot of internal links basically pointing at a black hole.

Scrap the no indexing categories it is then!

For your purposes I would allow them to be indexed because they are integral to your internal link structure.

There are other circumstances however when I personally would noindex all category and tag pages.
