No Index Categories?

Usually, I wouldn't think of no indexing categories, but what happens if you have 50+ categories.

For example, say that the main category is Hi-Fis, and then you list 10 brands in a drop down menu. You then do this for four other product types, such as earphones, stereos etc. Would this be okay?

  • Of course you can index it. In some cases categories might even rank better than an article for example. It all depends on your on-page optimization for the selected category.
  • I think noindex'ing categories could really F your site. You are going to end up with a lot of internal links basically pointing at a black hole.
  • Scrap the no indexing categories it is then!
  • For your purposes I would allow them to be indexed because they are integral to your internal link structure.

    There are other circumstances however when I personally would noindex all category and tag pages.
