I have just gotten a fantastic link on a nice PR8 site and it's on the homepage.
I've spent about a year building a relationship to get this link.

The only problem is it goes to the www.abc version of our site and our site is on the http://abc version of the site.

I am a little worried about mailing him to ask to change as he has been good to us by adding the link as it is.

Does this make a big difference to the juice the link passes of is it nothing to worry about as the Search Engines know what is happening?

The reason i'm a little worried as on: Open Site Explorer the www and http are completely different results.

Thanks for any advice.

Just make sure you're www. version is redirected to the non www version and all is fine. If your site is WP then it happens automatically, otherwise you can set it up at your cpanel.

If the www and non-www versions of your site are seen as separate sites, then you should simply do a 301 redirect from the www to the non-www version.

That way, it doesn't matter which version the link points to (although, if you have the option, you should get it changed to the non-www version)

Thanks guys - yes it is forwarded to the http version - i've been told by someone though that it does lose juice though.
It's Opensiteexplorer that makes them appear totally different.

      Hi staffjam,

Yes, you have been told correctly, there is a decay factor built into the PageRank algorithm and you will lose about 15% of the link juice if you do a proper 301 redirect. But, hey 85% is better than none. Make sure it is a 301 Permanent redirect or you will not get any juice at all.

It doesn't lose link juice if you do it the right way and do a 301 redirect.. that's the kinda thing it was made for.

I've tested this and dburk is right, you lose a little juice. I don't know if it's exactly 15% but you lose a little.

I would just ask him to change it! Just thank him for linking to you and play the newbie card:

Thanks so much for linking to my site! I was so excited when I saw the link. I'm new at this and don't really know how it works, but I noticed that you are linking to the www version of my site and my site in on the non-www version here: Mysitehere.com. Do you know if this will mess me up? I don't get how this stuff works! Someone told me it could be bad if this happens.
