Adsense ad types do make a difference...

If there was any question in my mind about what ad type to select with adsense it was answered yesterday. Always go with Text & image/rich media ads. I had my sites set to Image/rich media ads only all day yesterday and while the cpc was up, the ctr was horrid, which made my ad request rpm drop significantly.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up in case you were wondering if there was a difference.

  • Awesome, a 1 day sample size based on unknown criteria from some anonymous dude on the internet!
I'll sleep safer at night with this data!

    • Perhaps the fact that this does backup what google claims. Whether you find it helpful/useful doesn't mean others don't. I am not selling some scheme or SEO services to make 10,000 per month.

FYI, everyone is pretty much anonymous on these boards. If people only read and considered posts from people they knew personally there wouldn't be anyone here.

  • Image ads scream "AD!" Text ads have always done best. Also, Google knows what theye're doing. let them decide which ads run best on your site.

    • Gotta agree with Joshua here, really not statistically significant. On some of my sites image ads actually way outperformed text ads. Maybe it was some low-ctr crappy corporate banner that was responsible for these stats? I think you can block individual advertisers, can't you?
  • Test. You can't really extrapolate with any real certainty from the overall data. You control a lot of variables that might put your pages in a unique sub-set that doesn't conform to the average.

Once you have steady traffic coming in, test it. I've almost always had better results with text-only ads, but not always always.

    • I made the change over several of my sites that have been around for a year or more and get over 2000 visitors a day. I know what I typically see for a CTR on those sites, and yesterday it was about 1/3 of what it typically is. That is a huge drop with the only change by me being the ad type. I changed my ad types back late last night and today, my numbers are back to what they were before.

Could google be serving up different ads across those sites just for one day? That would be a heck of a coincidence.
  • Of course the make a difference. Why would you have ever thought to the contrary?
