I just got my site in the Dmoz directory yesterday. The Dmoz page that contains my link is PR5 and contains about 15 other links. Can I expect a boost for all my keywords from being Dmoz listed?

The link from Dmoz is my brand name. I am already number 1 for my brand name on google and am currently targeting more important keywords. Will the Dmoz link merely make my brand name SERP stronger or effect my site for all keywords?

  • Dmoz helps but only if combined with other high authority sites.

    • Yeah its basically just a nice directory. Personally I don't use it much, as I'd rather go for more content marketing type of backlinks, but its definitely a strong link to have for diversification.
  • Thanks for the replies. I have no doubt the link will be helpful but the question is; in what way?

    If my brand name is for example "Big Bill's" but I want my homepage to rank for "shiny apples" then I would need to make a lot of backlinks with the anchor text "shiny apples". I could also have the title tag "Big Bills - Shiny Apples". If the Dmoz listings anchor text was "Big Bill's" then presumably it would not increase the ranking for "shiny apples"? (Unless it was in the title tag). Furthermore I am assuming it would also not increase home page rankings for "big oranges" a keyword that lets say isnt in "big bills" title tag. Lets say "big oranges" isnt even on big bills website but is purely ranking in the SERPS from offpage SEO.

    • Hard to say with 100% certainty but you are likely going to see in increase in rankings across the board, even on your inner pages. The dmoz link, even if it was a bare link, is pushing a ton of link juice to your homepage. So assuming that you have good internal linking structure, your entire site will benefit. No matter what your keywords are, even if they are unrelated, the link will help.

      I can verify this because I have bought domains that had dmoz listings completely unrelated to the keywords I was promoting, and it did make a difference. Just be sure to include the keywords you want to rank for in all the right spots and you will see a higher ranking solely because you have the dmoz link in place.

    • Keywords in Anchor text? Not anymore! Dat was OLD SCHOOL SEO. You need a natural, random link profile now. Do not have more than 20% of your links with any exact keywords now.

      The value of keywords in anchor text is a double-edge sword... Not the benefit it was a year ago. Unnatural anchor text in your backlink profile can be very harmful now. Diversity is more important now.

      Too many backlinks with exact keyword anchor text is a disadvantage now. Negative SEO.

      Your brand name or URL is still okay. Mix it up. "Big Bills - Shiny Apples" and "Shiny Apples by Big Bills". Etc...
  • I agree with Matt. Dmoz link helps a lot with all your keyword searches. Many of my sites are on Dmoz. One site which only has DMOZ as the only high-authority links in the tank after Penguin. The other sites which had links from high-PR domains in addition to DMOZ keep ranking high in all their keywords despite not being updated in over 2 years.

  • I also have several websites listed in DMOZ and as far as i know the backlinks from there does give my sites some boost in ranking and traffic.
