Why do single words have low competition?

In the Google Keyword tool, why do single word keyword phrases always have low competition? For example, everyone knows there are hundreds of millions of websites about dogs, but the Google Keyword Tool claims that the word "Dogs" has a competition value of only 0.3 despite the fact that it receives 368,000 exact match local searches per month.

I've made it my rule of thumb to never use single word keyword phrases, but if the competition value for a single word seems to be so incorrect, it made me wonder if the same can be said for keyword phrases that have only two or three words.

This tool is about advertisers competition. Single kws has low competition because last years long tails generate sales As simple as that.

Single words do not indicate buying intent, so less advertisers compete for them.

The competition column in the Keyword Tool has absolutely nothing to do with the level of SEO competition. It has to do with the number of advertisers bidding on the keyword in AdWords.

They need to make your comment a sticky at the top of the SEO forum, then lock the thread.

Yeah. Probably 500 of my posts are answering that question.

Also should make a sticky about broad, phrase, exact match.

Instead we have a sticky about Build My Rank.

Yes, because clearly everyone makes a point of reading all those stickies, and they never post the same questions over and over again.

That's because it's a very generic and unfocused keyword. Simple as that. You would be wasting a lot of money advertising for something like that.

Think of a guy typing "SEX" into Google.

Does he want straight sex? Maybe he wants casual sex. Maybe he wants same sex sex. No one knows. If he typed in free perverted sex pics, then his intent becomes much clearer.

What kind of longtail phrases can a car dealer optimize for. We usually optimize for model names. For instance we sell Toyota Landcruiser SUV, how would we find longtail keywords that show purchase intent. Doesn't typing a car name show intent?
