which is important competitor's domain or ranked page

hello warriors , i like the forum here and i learned alot from you

i am doing keyword research for amazon niche review site

the first spot in google competitor's have authority site about different products reviews

or even different keyword information so when searching for main key word comes one of

his pages not the home page this page have 87 links while the homepage

domain i mean have thousands of links it has pr3

i researched many keywords for different niches but still the same competitor's one of his pages ranks in first 3in google first page
Some keywords he is the only competitor with pages from amazon, youtube videos etc

which shall i consider domain backlinks or page backlinks that is ranked for this keyword
i used seo quake it give wrong few number of his domain links so i used open site explorer and back link watch. By the way each gives different results which of tnese is the one you rely on

  • There are lots of variables but i will say both.

    If am to illustrate by percentage here is what i see:

    1. Domain - 40%
    2. Page - 60%

    In the past when EZA, Articlesbase, Hubpage, Squidoo use to be hot,
    you can easily rank your new published content page with minimal back link
    due to the authority and trust of the domain.

    The same thing still applies to authority sites like Amazon, eBay e.t.c all rank for specific product
    with virtually no back link due to their authority and trust from the search engine.

    • Thanks for your reply it is really helpful, but amazon pages if found in top ten can be ranked, this competitor site pages itself ranks amaxon pages
  • Ranked page is more important especially with the latest EMB update where emd domains are almost meaningless.

    • Thanks, so if first google spot is a page with 60 backlinks half of them from pr 2-8 what do you think?
      Majority of pages i found backlinks is from pr3-5 is it a good oppurtunity to rank for me?
  • I rather build the page with pagerank, for some reason homepage never last long and you can never rely on it. Build links to a certain page rather seems simple enough for me.
