Hey guys

As you may or may not know another huge update hit. I am still seeing the sames trends of sites that got hit.

However...I would really like to compare sites.

If you got hit or did not get hit it would be awesome if some people shared sites (mainly the hit ones) so we can compare them

Hard to tell what is what anymore but the emds that stuck only have 10 private network links and the partial matches fell to +200 across all keywords which seems too consistent to not call a penalty. Which? I don't kno.

On your sites that dropped where you doing any extensive external/internal linking within the content?

edit: Nice thread Baker, but i doubt many people would want to expose their niches to the entire IM community, but I have had several members send me a PM with their sites and so far i'm seeing the exact same trends across the board.

My favorite EMD "florida-palm-trees.com" laughs at updates like this.

That one is worth studying. I notice they only use the keyword phrase once in the body of the homepage, not counting title and h2, and the times it's used in the url.

My favorite, drivewaypaint.info used to dominate the first page. They're not completely knocked out, but they've been badly hit.

The emds that seem to be surviving seem to be larger and branching out in lsi phrases

My only true emd still sits at #3. I did limited backlinking (nothing spammy), backlinked with lots of lsi anchor text

The largest number of backlinks to florida-palm-trees.com is naked text. But that's followed closely by "Florida Palm Trees." They also have a high percentage of sitewide links and dofollow. Nothing all that natural about their links and nothing that special about their content. They sure do have a lot of ads too. Seems they're able to violate all the 'common wisdom' that gets handed down. I think the straight URL links is what's saving them TBH.

Drivewaypaint.info has a VERY unnatural anchor text and link distribution.

        text 14,463
        dofollow 14,417
        nofollow 46
        sitewide 12,281
        not sitewide 2,182

That's way to0 many sitewides. A HUGE percentage of the anchor texts contain one of the anchor text variations each containing the "driveway paint" term. Their backlink profile conforms to my view of this update and what it targeted closely.

Drivewaypaint.info is one I tried to beat 6 month ago (I still have a competing domain that used to be in position 30 or so). I gave up because they had way too many backlinks to compete with. Google will knock them out with legitimate authority paint sites (Sherwin Wiliams etc) and youtube.

As far as one of my competitors very thin site EMD .com is strong #2 spot (where I used to be ) so as far as I'm concerned they are still ranking strong but maybe not for long....we'll see.

The site only has 85 backlinks linking back to 1 site with thin content but it does have great professional graphics and no adsense or any monetization of any kind.

It's outranking a few authority sites for the keyword phrase so it's kind baffling to me that it's still there.

The #1 spot is an authority site that isn't very good looking no EMD and thousands of backlinks including .edu & .gov so it looks pretty solid. It has only one adsense skyscraper on the right side.

I'm honestly surprised they're not "completely" knocked out. I mean, that on-page optimization alone sucks. The exact keyword is in bold 3 times in the first paragraph alone, not to mention the other 8 in bold throughout the article.

edit: Here's another one (MNS) that was ranking #3 before the updates, now dropped: cheappavingslabs.org

Damn, I just looked at the site now too. Rewrite that thing. WOW

Cheappavingslabs.org only has 12 total links, the majority of which say "Cheap Paving Slabs."

One of my sites constantly gets different rankings every time I do a search for the site name. After the penalty it showed up on page 15 for awhile, then it moved to page 12, then it moved to page 39 for a few days and now it is currently on page 10.

I guess it would be considered an EMD, but it's not really what the site is about - I bet if I picked some random domain name for this site most of the pages would still be ranking high...

You should probably clear the cache on one browser and use it just for searching. Of course stuff like location will also change your results

Haha, did I tell you I once asked the mods if I could make a thread in the Warriors Wanted section asking to rent sig space from people on this forum? Wasn't allowed but I thought well can at least try right.

Won't call names but I do see plenty of other people doing that but hey I ain't gonna risk my account here. Just need to bump it a little more often, no problem either.

None at all. I got out of the EMDs a few years back. I had a network of these types of sites back in 2005-2009. They were all thin content MFAs that I also sold links on and they got deindexed somewhere around 2010.

I only built them for the easy money back then. After this happened I went with names that have no keywords at all in them if I could avoid it.

I have been hating on the idea of small sites for a long time. Sure, a network or websites for backlink fodder makes sense. But if you're trying to build and rank multiple websites, it gets old quick.

I used to have 320 domains in my heyday. Now it's down to 78. They're all older domains now that have lasted pretty well through most of these updates. When the domain renewals come up I review them. If the site doesn't make any money I get rid of it. I hate owning and renewing domains all the time

I basically agree with the philosophy of making about 5 authoritative big sites and leaving it at that. I don't trust having only one website only, but I don't think you can manage and nurture 320 domains!

Thanks for the reply. Of your sites that have held up in rankings, are they all similar in structure to the one you just posted (florida palm trees)? I'm seeing the same pattern in the SERP for that keyword except for the allseason site at #7. At least according to the scale I've come up with.

And nurturing a lot of sites "effectively" can definitely be done but you'll need a decent sized team behind you. And even then you better be d*m good when it comes to project management and tracking. (I often find myself lost in my own projects after taking a break ) In the end I think it all comes down to getting the most return for your TIME (not necessarily cash investment) along with risk management. My philosophy is basically going after the opportunities, whether that leaves me with 10 authority sites or just 1. I still like niche sites for spreading around the risk a bit though.

There are some similarities indeed. I'm turning up a lot of similarities with sites. It's easy to see why certain EMDs are afflicted.

You want to see an EMD that is just KILLING it? BedAndBreakfast.com. Completely authoritative. Ranks for almost every variation of their targeted keyword for TONS of sub-pages. This site is like an IM's wet dream.

You know what really stands out about their backlink profile? They have links from over 6,800 IP ranges. DrivewayPaint.info on the other hand has only 77.

An IM can get backlink quite easily from 77 IP ranges. Doing it from 6,800 is a whole nother class of either strategic SEO, link building, or god forbid "natural organic success."

I think DrivewayPaint.INFO could be brought back too. Just start blog commenting with the name "Joe." Do it for a month or two until you get to 900 IPs or so and tone down all those sitewides. I bet a lot of people here have very similar backlink profiles.

my site got hit bad - traffic is gone.

My main traffic keyword was "fibromyalgia symptoms" I had been ranking between #5 and #8 for the past couple of months. Today its page 10. The page on my site that was ranking was-

    fibromyalgia-treatment.com/fibromyalgia-symptoms

I have no idea why.... and no clue what to try and do about it.

Just a hunch, but repeating your keyword (fibromyalgia) 63 times on the page probably did not help you out.
