Create one authority site from multiple niche sites

Hi all,

After the recent Google updates, it's clear that big authority sites are the way to go. To be honest, I've wanted to ditch my multiple niche sites in favour of one big site as it's too much to maintain otherwise.

If I remove these URLs along with content from Google's cache, is it worth me adding all the content into one site? These are mainly product reviews and although they are reviewing household items, I'm not sure they should be amalgamated into one. For example, you wouldn't expect to find a site solely reviewing kettles, carpet cleaners and coffee machines?

I guess I'm worried the content would be a bit random to the visitor and I'm not sure how Google would respond to such a site or whether it cares about my choice of product review categories...

Jodie, there are a lot of big sites that have multiple categories that encompass a lot of niches. As long as you create a good site structure and navigation, there is nothing wrong with such a site.

One thing I'd do if I were you would be to keep the number of categories low at the beginning and have a lot of reviews in each category.

That means that instead of having 10 categories with 10 reviews each, I'd create 2 categories with 50 products each and then expand from there.

Plus, I'd add informative posts like "buying guides" and "usage tips" that add to the value of your site.

Creating such a big site takes time and effort, but I know from personal experience that it starts to pay off after a while (and not too long if you work hard on the site).

No, you're missing the point of this update. It's about site usefulness, not amount of content.

You need to work on your site structure and menu system to pull this off, if you just start throwing content up on a wordpress blog style site I don't think you should expect anything good for results.

Not too sure about that. There are plenty of posts that large sites have been hit too.

Good point. I have three large sites that were hit by three different updates so size does not matter.

There are no guarantees in life. We could all be killed by lightning too. Still, it seems a 10 page website and a 2,000 page website are completely different animals. That's especially true if the 2,000 pages have been built up over time.

Smaller sites are more likely to be abused for quick hits. Grab an EMD, outsource 10 pages of content, do some backlinking. Rinse and repeat. They almost scream low quality in some cases. Check out DrivewayPaint.info for more

Good thread, I've been wanting to do this for a while, but the technical side of it seems daunting. So the comments here have inspired me to look for the easiest option to move the contents of two sites to another existing site in the same hosting account - surely, even I can do this . If anyone has done this, it would be nice to learn how. I'll also let you know if I manage to do this easily. Thanks, Di

I don't see the issue with multiple topics on one site. Most people don't really surf in to the main page and then click on categories and then choose posts. They generally land on the post in the first place. As long as you have clear navigation you should be fine.

I think it's pretty obvious why most 'one man band' IMs would move to having fewer sites. It's a lot easier to manage and your cumulative efforts takes that domain to a higher level than your tiny sites will ever reach. Sure, you can get hit by a Google update, but that's why you're using PPC as an additional means of driving traffic. I mean, you have learned that you need more than one source of traffic by now, right?

Yes, PerformanceMan, I am no longer going to rely on Google.

It's actually quite a relief to move all content to one place as building backlinks and managing URLs has just overwhelmed me and I've had to create various accounts on web 2.0 sites that I can no longer maintain.

That said, I intend to edit all copy and add more guides rather than just throw my product reviews onto a new site.

Makes sense. I think you're headed in the right direction. The main way so many websites that are considered authorities got that way was by continuously adding content. That very well could be a sign that the company behind the website has the capacity to compete online.

I envision a website that is always adding more content and is at the same time building mailing lists per category and using PPC and SMM to drive additional traffic. The site would have the advantage of momentum and the archive would obviously pick up lots of long tail. If the affiliate links are in the old posts the money should roll in. Plus the mailing list would be used to 'touch base' and promote additional offers.

I think it is a good move, but don't look at your EMD adventures as a waste of time... what it has done is help you identify profitable niches and now you can concentrate on building a larger site around those niches.

Take a look at Amazon for some ideas on how to structure your site. A silo structure will be well worth it! For instance on Amazon you have something like this:

Home and Kitchen >> Bedding >> Sub-Categories like:
    • Comforters & Sets
    • Duvet Covers & Sets
    • Quilts
    • Bed Pillows
    • Sheets & Pillowcases
    • Bedding Collections
Home and Kitchen >> Furniture >> Sub-Categories like:
    • Chairs
    • Tables
    • Bedroom Furniture
    • Dining Room Furniture
    • Home Bar Furniture
    • Home Entertainment Furniture
    • Home Office Furniture

Yes, big sites occasionally get hit too, but the "oh, look, bigger sites are being hit too, so lets keep popping up 1 page sites" motto seems nothing more than an excuse.

The small niche sites and the Authority type sites are two different models. One is more suited for hit and run tactics, meaning that you create and rank them as fast as you can, make money for a while (if you know what you are doing) and abandon them when they are hit.

The other one is just the opposite. You keep adding good content, answering people's questions, getting involved in your niche and in time you reap a lot of rewards.

Sure Google may do something stupid and hit your site somewhere down the road, but if you manage to establish a reputable presence, you will still get traffic from many sources including word of mouth and return visits.
