Will localizing my blog on webmaster tools make it lose it's chances in global ranking?

I've got a fitness blog, it's fairly new and most of the posts will be about local events, classes, gyms, etc... So naturally my readers will be mostly locals. However I will be writing some more general posts about health and fitness though and will be doing keyword research/backlinking for those. So if it's at all possible, I'd like to try to rank those posts later on for global searches.

Now my question is, if I use webmaster tools country specific targeting on my blog, will it hurt me for global searches???? or will it just improve my chances for local searches but still allow me to compete like normal for global ones?

I run a .com domain by the way so localization isn't default. I currently have it targeting my country but I'm reconsidering just bringing it back to the default global targeting.

It's always easier to target by country, which will also include you in other countries Google thinks is relevant.

For example, I have one site listed for USA on webmaster tools, but when I check my Ahrefs account it shows that its ranking for over 1000 keywords across 17 countries including UK, Australia, NZ, Canada, etc.
