  • I want to sell a list with edu and gov from where you can get great backlinks. If you are interested PM me.
  • You can either scrape them, buy them or have some one do the job for you.
  • Yes they are, and so are .com backlinks. geez i dont understand why people are so concerned about edu and gov!! they are just as good as any .com or .net backlink. i tried posting on a ton of edu sites but never saw any major improvement that .com backlinks couldnt do. i dont know if i'm missing out on something but for me edu and gov are no different than .coms.

    • You are sounding like Matt Cutts!!
    • That's odd. I keep getting testimonials that edu and gov links are more reliable than .com or .net links. Perhaps it is how "legit" the sites your links come from and .edu and .gov links are more reliable.
  • I frequently heard about .edu and .gov links but not sure how effective they are. Have any special facility for Ranking or others.
  • It's really hard to get a .edu or .gove backlinks, even if you scrape every each one of the, register or comment it's still hard to get a backlinks on this domains but it is really worth getting 1 backlink than getting 1000 on any other domain.

Was it freshlistbank.com? I used to use them for edu/gov links but they get diluted I think.

Best way to find them for you is to search for ways to find them, then find edu/gov links in YOUR niche.

Scrapebox is good for finding them as you can find edu/gov blogs on different blog platforms and then find the highest PR blogs to comment on first.

Here are some example dorks to get you started

    EDU BLOGS, GOV BLOGS

    EDU Guestbooks
Guestbooks can too be quite good for dropping backlinks and if you want a few edu ones
with good PR heres a couple below. I won’t go into detail on how toadd your link as I’m
sure you will all know, anyway here are the footprints and the links.
However there is one thing about the links… use your “Anchor” Text as your name
which will become the “Anchor” Text for your url.

    site:.edu inurl:guestbook
    inurl: edu guestbook
    inurl:edu Link:
    site:edu inurl:guestbook +"found atMatt's Script Archive"
    inurl:"guestBook.aspx" site:edu
    inurl:guest inurl:guest site:edu

Its that EDU/GOV domains are usually reserved for governments/universities etc and as such usually have a lot of authority and usually much more than a .com.

    • Now thats a big myth. domains dont have authority just becoz they are reserved for governments/unis. atleast i'd think so. google wont give any extra boost if the backlink is from edu TLD. however these domains are really old and usually very informational which tends to have attracted a lot of authority sites linking to them(getting link juice from them). hence they build up that trust google is looking for. but its no different than any .coms. Any .com backlink from a high authority site(better if from a PR holding page) would give you same result as .edu.

People should understand that its not because of the TLD's, its because of what is on the edu TLD.

  • @Mkcoy: that edu/gov holds more weight as a source of backlink is the theory. His point is that with his testing, they are no better than any other source. Have you tested them to see if they actually boost rankings?
  • They are good links still as far I can tell
  • That was interesting, thanks for the breaks down on how to find all the different types of back links I will be using that one soon, I wonder how much weight in link juice they actually do give. Can't wait to find out.
  • I'd say it's very effective.

Why struggle with wasting your time on it though?

You can outsource the daylights out of this..

    Just go on Fiverr
  • Go to Google and searching you can find lot of edu and gov links,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
  • Great tips! Authority sites are perfect for quality backlinks. Thanks for sharing
  • You'd do better by just pucharsing some quality edu backlinks than creating them manually. If you will find good place to pucharse them... they are like pure gold!

    • An important thing to note is that one quality edu/gov is ten times better than normal edu/gov link.

The key here is quality backlink.
  • They are still effective as google sees them more credible, but .com and others are equally effective too.
  • If you can get a real legit .edu or .gov link, they can be great. To get a real one though, you need to contact the web administrator and ask for a link. Of course, that also means you need to have a worthwhile site to link to. That will probably eliminate 99% of the members here.

If someone is selling .edu or .gov links, they are crap. They are no different than any autoapprove blog with 500+ comments already. Google gives no special relevance to .edu or .gov links. It evaluates the pages the links are on just like a link from a page with any other TLD.

Cannot believe people are still chasing this stupid shit.

Do remember that is just your personal opinion. And remember what doesn't work for you might still work for someone else and vice-versa.

"Google gives no special relevance to .edu or .gov links."

Making statements like that will imply you must work for Google and know this for sure as a fact then Mike?

Can you backup that statement with any empirical evidence? Do you have much personal experience going back years with using edu/gov domains?

"If someone is selling .edu or .gov links, they are crap"

That's a very broad statement to make though. What if someone was selling say x amount of edu blogs in the buyers niche? Are they not just as good as any other TLD? Or they are crap?

The true reason people like EDU/GOV domains is that they are usually very hard to require. You literally need to be a university or governmental department to own one and as such there are not as many of them so not as many have been spammed so thats what makes them so alluring to blackhat or even whitehat IM webmasters. It has nothing to do with how much authority the TLD has. JMHO

It's called link building get used to it.
  • .edu & .gov domains are still good sources for backlinks. These domains usually have a higher PR, and are not considered "spammy".

    • Says the person selling .edu and .gov links.
  • I think .edu/.gov domains are overrated in SEO really, but a couple of them do seem to help. I do believe Google can see the quality of them though, so if they think it is just a comment on a blog on a .edu domain then it's less important than a published article link or homepage link.
