Google Dance FOREVER!

My main keyword in number 2 then it goes to number 4 then back to number 2 then back to number 4. This has been happening for 3 months! Sometimes this happens multiple times during the day. It just doesnt settle. I had a 3 week stop at number 2 then back to the dance. I hate dancing!

I am not making noob mistakes and am viewing it in a brower with no cookies, history, google account etc.

Anyone got any ideas? It is really doing my head in big style. I am sick of going "yay number 2" then "aww crap number 4".

An additional note is that the 2 serp results I am dancing with are 2 pages off 1 website that have been indexed since 2008. I also just got indexed in Dmoz 3 weeks ago and it didnt stop the issue.

  • Going from 2 to 4 is not a dance. Going from 2 to 15 to 37 to 6 to 12 to 5 is a dance. Nothing is going to settle and be permanent. Content is constantly entering the index for your niche and your results will constantly be impacted accordingly, along with popularity and google's likeness of certain pieces of content. I really wouldn't obsess about 2 position's difference.

  • What have you been doing SEO / Marketing wise lately?

If you continue to build links and do site changes / add content your site ranking can fluctuate.

Ping your site, I bet it will go up again.

    • What have you been using to check your rank? If you are using a tool, most tools, the way they query return results that google frequently returns multiple results for a single domain individually, but can vary from morning to afternoon, one query to the next.

Try to use a tool that returns the true results users see, like the one in my signature. Whenever you rank in the top 25 for a keyword, on the next check we will use the more accurate way to query google, so you will see a lot less fluctuation and spot on results.
  • Yea that aint no google dance. It's pretty normal. Dancing would be jumping all over the place, sometimes completely out of the top 100.
  • Last I knew, Google has at least two different indexes they switch back and forth between. This can also add to the bouncing back and forth phenomenon.

I'm just impressed you got listed by the DMOZ. I'm here tonight to see if anyone has had any luck lately, as I've not seen any sites get listed in a looong time.
