I'm new to SEO and have been reading SEO blogs and forums such as this one to learn as much as I can about SEO best practices, but do you have a personal recommendation for what's helped you the most?

Would paying for an SEO certification program be worth the money? If any of you have completed a program, what was it and would you do it again?

Everything I learned was from reading here and using search on Google. Truthfully there probably isn't a question thought of that hasn't been asked on here at least 10 times over, so don't be afraid to look deeper into the thread list or use the forum search.

Yeah this is my first couple of posts on here, and it's all a little overwhelming. It'll take me weeks to read through it all.

SEOMOZ, Warrior forum and BHW depending on your needs. Between these 3 I think you can learn pretty much everything there is to know about SEO.

This forum is OK but I wouldn't listen to 95% of the ppl here. They're either regurgitating stuff they saw posted by "gurus" so they take that as gospel ("Hey, this guy first registered on this site in 2004 and has 500+ 'Thanks' so he must know what he's talking about!") without testing it themselves first or they're just flat out making up stuff because they have an ulterior motive (see: WSOs). There are some really quality posters though like the two Mikes, Yukon, botnetwork (or bnetwork), etc. and sometimes nik0 knows his stuff, too. Sometimes. You should read their post histories and you will learn a lot.

You should also visit other big SEO forums including those that are dedicated to blackhat stuff.

Which two Mikes might this be? I'll look into them. Thanks for the tip! Also what other SEO forums are you a part of?

        Friedman and Anthony

This is the only public SEO forum that I'm a part of. The rest are invite-only so no point in giving you the names. You could try blackhatworld.com but a lot of the the members there are pretty newbies, too. There are a couple of good ones on there like meatro, madoctopus, and Scritty. Look up their names and read their post histories. Those guys are legit. Between the names I gave you from this forum and the names from blackhatworld, you're already a step ahead on most SEO'ers.

This is how I feel as well. There's just so much out there to learn. I figured I'd start with industry blogs first and branch out from there once I've got the basics.

Do you think a certification program like Google AdWords would be worth it? Or wait until I get more of a grasp on things before delving into that?

Yes, SEO blogs and Forums can help you! And by doing some research, do an experiment. Test everything that you had learn on blogs and forums then configure what works and what's not.

SEO is very easy and basic... it's not rocket science.

      basic formula...

good relevant content on your site + good relevant votes/links pointing back to your website from other websites = your site will rank higher

then of course there are other additional factors, over 200 that the search engines use to determine if your site is good, is it better than site b, and c? etc.. etc... etc

huh?? lol.. not sure why you quoted me, but by "hiring a professional provider" you wouldn't be referring to yourself by any chance, right?

The main mantra of SEO is relevancy and quality not quantity.

Optimize the site from the visitors perceptive and not from the search engine perspective.

If you run a website, put yourself in your visitor's shoe and think what your visitor would like most about blog and why, and what more you as a site owner can offer your visitors.

Make a landing page, from where you can funnel the visitor help them join your site.

what ever you do always offer quality content, which your visitors find interest to read.

when you build back link for your site, keep in mind that 10 quality links are far better 1000 poor quality back link.

Since Google can penalize you if you generate back link from poor quality website just to increase the number.

In SEO there is no hard and fast rule to learn just keep your eyes open, do research, and read as much as you can.
