How Many Keywords Do You Generally Target Per Niche?

Do you generally target dozens and dozens of keywords when entering a niche or just a small handful? I suppose it depends on the niche but I guess I'm asking this because sometimes I think I'm spread too thin, targeting a lot of different keywords when I'd probably have a better chance if I just focused on 4-5 for link building purposes. Love to get some feedback on this.

Second question: When all of the keywords are basically interchangeable (ie dog food, food for dogs, food for a dog), do you generally just make a lot of variations of the same page while devoting each page to each of those specific keywords, or do you target them all on the same page?

    Hi,

It depends on you! You can target only 5 with descent amount of exact match and cpc. You can also target 20+ keywords too. I suggest you got to have 20 to 30+ quality pages/post and build quality links to it to avoid penalization. You know what i mean.

On the first question, I would have to say target as many as you can dedicate sufficient time to, making sure you are creating quality content and backing it up with great link building.

On the second question, I would recommend targeting just the one, most popular variation of the keyword. Otherwise you will either end up with duplicated content or you will create boring, useless drivel that when found will be of no interest to users.

    • You are the only one who can decide how many keywords to target. It is advisable to make a list of keywords with high search volume and low competition, choose a few, and start writing content. As you add more posts and your website grows, you can use more keywords from your list.

1- It kind of depends on the niche. If there are too many good keywords in a niche, I'd target them all in time (starting with 5-10 and then growing from there).

2- I wouldn't definitely create separate pages for dog food, food for dogs, etc. It's a lot better and it makes much more sense to target them with one page (you can use the variations as anchor text for links).

I would generally prefer to have 20+ keywords generally target accroding to the client's requirement, but it might vary sometimes

Focus in a handful and as you build authority start targeting more. As far as keywords go, I find that grouping similar ones together works great.

Handle as many as you can justice to. If you target too many words you may write bad copy and it will show. Try 5 keywords at a time and once you have build links to it you can then move on to next five.

It seems to me that link building is an ongoing perpetual thing, so with every new page I create targeting a new keyword, that's one more page I have to keep building links to, correct?

I stick to a small list of maybe 5 and generally only one of those will be a top keyword. It's just too hard on your own to try and grab something from the more competitive ones. Little niches within a niche have done me good.

I usually start out with 30-40 keywords first. Targeting to many, especially with a small budget will dilute your ability to get indexed on a good page

Every post i write has one keyword i focus on and also some LSI keywords here and there in the post.

then after 2-4 days i write another post focused on another keyword (of course choosen with the right criteria of competition etc etc ) and the related LSI keywords

after 2-4 days another post with another keyword etc etc...and related LSI keywords

i go on till i have for example 15 -20 posts each one focused on a specific keyword(and related LSI keywords) related to my website.

I think would be beneficial before start the website campaign to have ready the posts and the keywords you compete for.

    What do you think guys?

The thing is you dont need to limit your targeted keywords because the more keyword you optimized the more you will get traffic through search engine so i would suggest everyone to optimize more and more high searchable keywords to get more visitors.

What I do is that, I take note of those keywords with minimal competition and good search volume, pick about maybe 5-10 keywords, which could also depend on the niche as well, jump right in for articles and other contents and just grow from there. It actually works for me. the more linking you do, the more time it takes, so figuring out how many keywords to go for, depends on how much time you have, and how much budget you have. Q2. group 2 -3 themed keywords per page, and optimize the entire on page SEO for those keywords.
