Newb Questions About Buying Used/Aged Domains

I'm completely new to the concept of buying an aged domain for SEO purposes but it seems like what all of the big successful SEOers are doing, so I have some questions.

Where do you get them and how do you search for them (by keyword, niche...)? How do you assess the value of that domain as in what are the merits you judge by?

What do you do with them once you have them? Do you simply forward them to your existing "money site"? Do you build content which is similar to your main site and exchange links between the two or do you just point links from the aged domain to your money site?

Sorry for my lack of scope on this but I appreciate it greatly.

  • you can buy Aged domains from Go daddy auction. Just try to buy the domain which is not penalized and is not de indexed from google. Also do check if the domain has some PR then it will be beneficial for you.

    thank you
  • Typically if you are buying aged domains you should be buying developed domains, in which case you should be contacting micro-sites within your industry and looking to acquire them.

If you are talking about the tactic of buying the raw domain itself, then typically you are looking to buy an exact match domain, build a lens page or small site around the keyword, linking to your main site.

The best places to buy these are on the retail market Sedo, and on the wholesale market any of the dropping domains providers e.g. Snapnames, NameJet.

You should be looking out for exact match search volume and CPC as well as other metrics such as PR, Alexa, etc. if developed/available.

    • A lot of good information in there, thanks.

When you say raw domain, do you mean just an empty domain with nothing on it? Does this also mean it has no links to it?

Secondly, when you say look for exact match search volume, you're referring to if the site has keywords in it you'd look those up, e.g. for a domain called "bestbluewidgets.com" you'd look up the exact match search volume and CPC for blue widgets?

And finally, to clarify generally you'd just put up a kind of mini site with just a handful of pages on it and point a few (targeted anchor textual) links from that site to your money site?

Sorry, also what is the difference between Sedo and NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO- Auctions? Does Sedo get the domains which domain registrars like NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO- and others can't sell even through auction... or where does Sedo get its domains basically? Is it that people bring their domains to Sedo specifically if they want to sell whereas domains on NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO- are all expired?

NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO- is meant to be Go Daddy in immature WF speak.

    • I think these are the ones you should be avoiding because of this Google's EMD Algo Update - Early Data | SEOmoz

My friend who has a high quality site with EMDs get kicked from first page to nowhere. He's on the verge of breaking down as up today the site hasn't recovered from it's lost rankings.

Aged domain more than 2 years has more authority, once you write a content and ping it it will rank high unlike less than 2 years domain.
  • Use Registercompass. It is well worth the money. You can filter gdaddy and several other sites by just about any criteria that matters. Buy aged domains with nice link profiles and a good MozRank. Don't get hung up on PR, which has little to do with the ranking potential of the domain.
  • Hi, I believed the checklists on this thread would help you! Check it below.

  • You can buy age domain from several auction site in the internet. You can select site which have some pagerank and also have visitor also. After buying site you can update this site with new content and should be related to site. You can also see google cache what this site looks before by using site: sitename or you can see in the archive.org.
