I Dropped to Page 2 For a Keyword I Ruled For Over a Year... What Now?

I was ranking first or second (it didn't really matter because my title is good and encouraged clicks so long as the page was visible in the top 3) for a particular high volume keyword which accounted for roughly 1/4 of my organic traffic. More recently I began to see my traffic dropping in GA so I looked into it and sure enough I had dropped off the first page of Google for that term.

Now I'm at the top of page 2. I've been replaced by much more recent posts and the top slot is occupied by an exact match domain for the keyword (a brand new, low quality site with just a handful of links to boot... so much for better search results).

Should I update my post at all, would that help? Do I just need to build more quality links seeing as I haven't touched it much in a long while?

You just need to start building up your page again. Start doing SEO again with high-quality links.

If you ranked # 1 for a while, that means your backlink portfolio is good, it is just starting to age, so your domain is strengthening from the age but your links get (for lack of a better word) devalued over time.

You need to keep the link building going to stay in your # 1 spot over time.

Do both! Post more quality contents on your site as well as building quality links on it! I am sure your rankings will be back!

Your site needs a little SEO nudge. Then make sure that you update it once in a while to maintain its rank.

Seems the big G EMD update is not working then!

Simply, re-index *ALL* your pages on a worthy RSS service, post about 10 short informational YT videos, with the same lost placement keyword as the title + some extra keywords that are trending|in the niche...

Wait a week... it will be back

I would recommend building more quality links together with updating your website with fresh content

    Thanks for the feedback.

Basically it is a content site which I make 2 quality posts to each week. The site has roughly 400 pages of content and they all revolve around different keywords. I don't do much to build links to them as I don't really know what kind of link building even works anymore in 2012.

I will make a YouTube video to correspond with the post and embed it within it but if anyone has any other tips on how I can rank it I'd appreciate it.

    Hello

I would like chime in with my half cent. I recently started losing rank on many keywords just yesterday and today. But interestingly I added a brand new product on Friday and the page has almost no text content and 2 pictures. I am not targeting any traffic and has no on page optimization. Well its #1 on google for the product name and I am beating all the more established companies that actually have this product and well suited on page SEO. So it got me thinking, do new pages get a bump up for a few days before google finally decides "well its #1 and nothing special happened time to move it to #30." I say this is weird as I am loosing rank for a ton of my items while my new unfinished page is number 1 for its keyword. Is that strange or what!

It relates to this post in the sense that a new domain has popped up and possibly the same effect is happening. Perhaps new pages are being prioritized in the algo in some way. I guess we will see in the coming weeks.

All you need is some more quality content and perhaps a few good backlinks and you can easily beat them out. I suggest typing their domain name in on google "http:// domain.com" and seeing what backlinks they used to get there and maybe look into getting that backlink for yourself.
